Fume Cupboard

Labxyz - 31-8-2009 at 05:57

Hello all!

I have just bought a fume cupboard of Ebay. The seller i bought it off seemed nice and helpful and orgnaised postage nicely.
After i had recieved the fume hood and put it in place, a day later i got a call and a visit from the police asking lots of questions why i bought it, intended use ect...
I am 14 years old so i made up lots of rubbish about school projects ect...

So my question, why is a fume cupboard a watched item nowerdays?!?!
I have sent a member here, Saber a message as he seems to know a lot about registering you lab and dealing with police but if anyone else has some advise that would be most appreciated.
I am Located in England.

Many thanks,

XYZ

Uh-Oh, no drugs or explosives, then. . .
You'll just have to find more mundane (safer) uses for the thing!
Meth residues on the hood from the seller's previous "activities" may have caught the interest of the sorting-office sniffer dogs!
I'm just joking!
At 14 you're probably the youngest here, and you're welcome aboard.
Seriously, if you can take some advice; try to stick with chemistry that won't mess up your health or your liberty?

itchyfruit - 31-8-2009 at 09:04

Just out of interest how much does it cost to send a fume cupboard through the post?

Labxyz - 31-8-2009 at 09:29

Please trust me, i have no intention on going into producing drugs, well to an extent.
At the moment i am in the middle of a synthesis of certain topical pain killers (PABA derivatives) and also may start azo dyes, derived from phenylamine. I have been into chemistry since i was 10, and have only wandered 'off course' last year when i make a couple of fireworks.
The fume hood i got was brand new so i hope there are no residues on it. I will clean it now just incase. Can anybody reccomend a solvent that will destroy any residues?
Dear itchyfruit- It cost me £45 to send the hood through the post, with a company called BPS world cargo.

Police?? If they go around corruptly doing that sort of thing in your country, with absolutely no demonstrable reason to believe that any crime has been or is about to be committed, I would call them Pigs or Gestapo! Have you thought of asking them WHO gave them your name and address, and WHY? If they refuse to say, you should see a lawyer and go to the Police Complaints Authority.

In my country, and also the U$A (although the Bill Of Rights there is frequently flouted by corrupt cops), unreasonable and unwarranted searches and seizures like that would be prohibited by human rights legislation.

itchyfruit - 31-8-2009 at 11:56

Wow that seems pretty reasonable, did it come from within the British isles?

hissingnoise - 31-8-2009 at 12:07

45 quid doesn't seem that reasonable---if British, from the outer, Outer Hebrides. . .

Labxyz - 31-8-2009 at 12:13

Well my guess was the seller handed me in. The thing is i dont care whatsoever... If they check me out it means they check other people out and if they do that it means they bust REAL drug cooks, which is a good thing right???
Yes my dad is a lawyer so if i run into any 'trouble' again he will help :)
The fume hood was located in London and i am not far from there but to be honest i do think it is pretty reasonable. I had quotes form big names like parcel force and TNT and they were all in the £100 + region so i was very pleased to find this company. The item wheighs around 100kg and is pretty big!

itchyfruit - 31-8-2009 at 12:15

It would be more of a surprise to me that their were any fume cupboards in the outer Hebrides in the first place :D

Labxyz - 31-8-2009 at 12:31

hah yea!

panziandi - 31-8-2009 at 13:08

Labxyz, why do I have the impression that you are Picric-A in disguise? Something about this username and eBay jumps out at me as being VERY familiar....

Labxyz - 31-8-2009 at 13:10

erm sorry?

kclo4 - 31-8-2009 at 13:14

I doubt he is.

Labxyz, for your info panziandi, and Picric A have had conflicts over trading various items, one being a fumehood. So I think this is where it stems from. There is a thread that discusses it a bit if you are interested I could find it for you.

Also lately a member or two has been signing up under different names to avoid their reputation or something like that, so this could also cause him/others questioning you.

Either way, very nice find! How much did the fumehood cost? I wouldn't mind seeing pictures of it.

panziandi - 31-8-2009 at 13:18

Oh very amuzing! This has me in hysteria! I find it highly unlikely that a 14 year old home chemist in England who had a fume cupboard transported from London to his home in the country who is using a username (Labxyz) on Sciencemadness which is the same username another guy from Sciencemadness (Picric-A) uses on ebay (Labxyz) who is also a home chemist, in England, who had a fume cupboard located in London and transported to his home in the country. Very VERY unlikely, but comical all the same.

hissingnoise - 31-8-2009 at 13:21

Picric-A<>Lab-X-Y-Z. . .Wtf!
Hilarious!

Oh! I see, well I did not know that side of the story.

Well.. this will be interesting to see how this pans out.

Picric-A - 31-8-2009 at 13:27

well form this i can sum up Panziandi is now VERY paranoid!!

I cant see the link! probs just me..... one point, if i were to make another account (LOL!) why would i use something so easily traceable? douche

Labxyz - 31-8-2009 at 13:30

I did indeed see the username of ebay and i used it, sorry panziandi if that is an offense to you.
and greetings Picric-A, my mini-me!

I can certainly see his point, and I wouldn't call that paranoia at all, you pretty much have an incentive to get a new screen name and as he pointed out, same names, same place, same subject (fumehood), etc.
I'm still pretty suspicious.

Labxyz - 31-8-2009 at 13:37

Oh well life goes on! we are both now online so we can both argue :)
and panziandi, i havnt taken this personally dont wory!

Might it be something to do with your singular, clownish lack of originality, by any chance. . .

panziandi - 31-8-2009 at 13:41

Oh amuzing is all I can say.

It would if i created a second account!

This is starting to piss me off now, Panziandi scams me of some Br2 and attemps to get more kit and im now the one who suffers!!!
(actually not only me but this new dude aswell!

panziandi - 31-8-2009 at 13:53

I think we established that I never received the Br2, and you have established you sent it, so between you sending it and me supposedly receiving it, it was lost in the post, and I did not ask you to get me any more, I went and purchased my own. We agree to disagree on this matter! I still don't believe you ever sent it, nor do I believe you ever intended to give me the hood, and ratehr you let me waste my time driving from uni to home to prepare to receive it. And conversely you do not believe that I never received the Br2. That's life.

Labxyz - 31-8-2009 at 13:58

Well this is getting personal between you two so im off to bed.
Good night Forum!

hissingnoise - 31-8-2009 at 13:59

Yeah, this is good shit! (cough!)

Picric-A - 31-8-2009 at 13:59

When did we establish that? All i ever established was you said you never recieved it then tried to make everry excuse you could for me to send you another one, eventually you settled on i 'scammed' you... Thats all we have come up with. you never let anybody hear my side of it... a while ago you never believed i even sent the £30 worth of bromine!!! what changed???

We did agree to disagree, so i thought but you keep having stabs at me through this forum so other ppl take your side, not fair!

You did create a second account. The IP addresses match. Before I wasn't sure who to believe about the panziandi/Picric-A spat but this is pretty damning evidence that you are a liar, and an incautious one, so it doesn't matter that a rational actor wouldn't do what you have done.

night mini-me! haha

Picric-A - 31-8-2009 at 14:02

ah awsome my own title :) whats an IP address?

Yes i did create the other account to try and make people believe that i am the innocent one here not panziandi although he makes it seem like that!

DJF90 - 31-8-2009 at 14:05

Cut the shit dude, you been caught with you hand in the jar so don't even try and play out of this one. And your tagline seems most appropriate...

entropy51 - 31-8-2009 at 14:19

I was hoping Polverone would clear this up with an IP check.

I think that establishes beyond a reasonable doubt that Picric-Ass is the unreliable one here. I had strongly suspected that already since there was no apparent reason for panziandi to make up such a detailed story.

As I've said, we have so much misinformation posted unknowingly that it's really intolerable to have pathological liars as well. It's hell on the signal to noise ratio.

DJF90 - 31-8-2009 at 14:34

He gave himself away before panziandi mentioned anything - Those who have been here long enough will remember his posts on pyro (I seem to recall something about a red phosphorus mix?) and also that he has lately had interest in "drugs" - see the thread on Propofol IIRC - Both related the early posts in this thread.

Strange that you mention Saber, he also shares your interest in analgesics and seems to share your writing style as well. And from what I can tell Saber doesn't know jack about registering labs. Have you another alter ego or ten?

Yes Entropy... He does appear to have a multiple personality disorder by the looks of it!

Sadly, it looks like I was correct. A troll with multiple personality disorder! Picric-A, Saber, Labxyz. I wonder who else he thinks he is? Itchy, is that really you?:D Just kidding.

I don't think anyone could fake my natural far reaching chemistry incompetence :D

kclo4 - 31-8-2009 at 17:10

Polverone, are you able to check IP addresses that match members with this forum software?
I know with SMF forum software you can click on an IP address of a member and it will show all the members under that IPm, or you can search related IP addresses by adding * in place of the last numbers. This is often the same person as well.
If you can would be interesting to see if he actively posts under any other names, or if he has in the past.

psychokinetic - 31-8-2009 at 17:16

---------------

Really? I'm quite glad about that. D'you think it would be worth taking my (required) form for purchasing restricted items down to the local cop-shop to let them know it's there before they come bursting in?

JohnWW - 31-8-2009 at 17:58

Yes; see the NZ Bill Of Rights Act 1990, on http://www.legislation.govt.nz . Do not bother with the NZ Pigs; the recent case of David Bain should have shown you how thoroughly corrupt they are (along with the cases of Arthur Alan Thomas, Rex Haig, Scott Watson, John Barlow, Peter Ellis, Victoria Calder, and David Dougherty, who were similarly framed). However, when importing chemicals, you may need to check with NZ Customs whether or not they are prohibited imports or are regarded as hazardous goods.

psychokinetic - 31-8-2009 at 19:52

Point.
BIIIG point.
Thanks for the heads up with the importation, I'll keep that in mind for when I've actually got some forward motion :P

undead_alchemist - 31-8-2009 at 21:33

I handle most of the customs clearance for my work.
For Canada Customs, depending on what office you deal with the customs agents can be helpful.
