ExXOlon - 10-3-2010 at 13:45

Hi !

After an order i have received DMSO in gel instead of liquid and i don't want to resend it to the seller.

How can i transform it into liquid form ?

Could vigorously mix with water and just do a couple of distillations.

The melting point of DMSO is 18.5 C. Is it "frozen"? If so warm it up a tad. It also can be fairly viscous above the melting point.

You can buy the DMSO in 70% concentrations with 30% "inert" gel, I guess I just assumed that's what it was.

91% DMSO in the gel i have.

Hi !

If i want to mix it with water before distill it,
What is the ratio of gel and water i need to mix together ??

maybe I need to add just enough water to completely dissolve the gel with shaking ?

For entropy51 :

it isn't frozen because it's a 91% DMSO GEL.

Buy new DMSO that's pure. This really isn't worth your time to try and purify it. You can't just distill DMSO, as it decomposes before it boils, so you'll need a very high vacuum setup to distill it. And then you'll get some rather wet DMSO out of the proces. Considering the stuff is dirt cheap, and widely available online in high purity, I would throw this stuff out.
