Phenol from phenolphthalein?

sumatra - 24-1-2019 at 09:30

As the title suggest, I'm looking for a procedure on how to make phenol from phenolphthalein. I couldn't find anything, suggestions? Would an acid or base hydrolisis work?

Why would you want to use phenolphthalein to make phenol? Aren't there cheaper chemicals (like salicylic acid) to start with?

I'm not in it for the yield or the price, it would just be a fun reaction tk do, I already decarboxylated salysilic acid somr time ago.

No.

Doing an experiment just for the fun of it is just as good a reason as any other. I guess, in a way, it's kind of a reverse engineering problem, like taking something apart to figure out how it works. Good luck and please post your results.

I don't know any rxns that can break Ar-C bonds. If someone know these I'd like to hear about them.
