Community Project - Destroy a funnel!

itsafineday - 31-3-2019 at 06:26

I bought a funnel from an exotic far off land . Unfortunately the funnel has some issues that slipped by quality control and in order to get a replacement or refund I have to furnish a pic of the funnel destroyed. This is in support of their policy not to sell used glassware.

I think it would be a fun learning experience to make a video destroying the funnel with chemistry . This is a 120mm thick wall glass funnel. I would love to hear ideas about how to creatively destroy this funnel. I don't have the best stock of chemicals . I can buy some stuff or ship the funnel to someone with better chems and skills (as long as I get to ask dumb questions).

I think it would be a very cool thread to see just what sciencemadness can do to this funnel!

Some good old thermite would certainly do the trick. You could also use molten NaOH or KOH to dissolve it.

what is the problem, looks like a funnel to me.

if it survives going from hot water to cold water it is fine.

There is a venturi effect created by disparity of the funnel aperature and stem diameter.

wait what?
do you mean it doesn't form a water "lock" (aka the stem doesn't fill with liquid)?

itsafineday - 31-3-2019 at 13:14

The hole in the bell of the funnel is much smaller than the diameter of the stem it feeds . It ends up aerating the liquid
rather than whirling smoothly without getting gassed up. It "sprays" into the stem.

Dissolve it in molten NaOH?

happyfooddance - 31-3-2019 at 14:39

Maybe because it is a powder funnel, not intended for transferring liquids

phlogiston - 31-3-2019 at 14:46

Tie a knot in the stem.

Or pack it really well, drop it from a high building. Then unpack it and hit it with a hammer.

When I read "destroy a funnel," I thought of this. Not that it helps you (safety, legality, cost, having a picture of funnel afterwards etc...) Don't ask me why I've viewed that thread, when I never plan any experiments like that:o
I really wonder how important having a solid stream is, anyhow. Even with a good funnel, the flow often breaks up before reaching the bottom of the container. Unless, that is, the tip of the funnel is submerged. I'd say, keep it as and save them money, and you shipping delays

Ubya - 1-4-2019 at 02:17

well the hole could be easily drilled with a diamond tip

Herr Haber - 1-4-2019 at 03:08

Send it to me so I can test my ball mill :)

Yeah, I know what you mean, explosives are boring and I can't imagine anyone having any interest in them. Actually that's sarcasm . I can remember going door to door for spare change in a montana trailer park when I was 6 years old just so I could buy some fireworks at the fireworks stand. Crazy I was successful, too.

All you "Save The Funnel" folks are making me feel guilty. If Herr Haber can make it a good funnel with a ball mill then he can have it and I don't need to get a refund. I would want to see a pic of it all prettified and functional .

Herr Haber - 1-4-2019 at 05:49

I dont know if I can make a good funnel out of it but I can certainly solve RogueRose ground glass problem :D

I'm new here, but this looks promising.

Tsjerk - 12-4-2019 at 14:54

It is a powder funnel.

No it's not.
Powder funnels have big holes + wide bore stems.

Tsjerk - 13-4-2019 at 03:19

OK, my bad.
