Developing TLC for Ketone?

overunity33 - 16-11-2010 at 23:32

I'm interested in developing a TLC plate (filter paper) for the presence of a ketone (mdp2p), what would be the best reagent? I can't get 2,4-DNPH... Would iodine vapors work? Is there a procedure for the iodoform test on a TLC plate? Anyone have advice?

either I2 or con H2SO4 spray would visualize the spots. A mixture of benzene and ethyl acetate might separate the side reax from the product. I've been using 150 DCM/40 et-Ac/ 30MeOH trc Et3N for awhile and it usually effects adequate sep for most purposes. I have a developing tank with I2 in a small beaker. Warmed a bit I see the results in a few minutes. I2 will attach itself to almost any aromatic ... H2SO4 fries almost any organic but its tricky to spray...ninhydrin also works but is costly.
