Cobalt sulfate toxicity for environment

Bedlasky - 27-6-2019 at 08:33

Hi.

I had little accident. I worked with solution of cobalt sulfate heptahydrate outside and dish with this solution was accidentally overturned and solution spill on grass. In solution was cca 3,5g of cobalt sulfate. Is there serious risk for nature? Is there anything I have to do?

well, it's not the end of the world, heavy metals in the garden is not the best thing, but 3.5g of cobalt is not going to permanently harm your grass.
if you are really worried you could just dig the top soil where you had the spill (but if you already watered your grass it's late)

No need to worry, the grass will abosrb the Co and thank you for this,if you're really worried, just pour 1~2L of water onto that area to dilute the Co. The grass will still absorb it.

From wikipedia:

"Cobalt(II) sulfate is used in storage batteries and electroplating baths, sympathetic inks, and as an additive to soils and animal feeds"

Although too much is bad, it is a necessary biological nutrient so I wouldn't worry unduly.
