Synthesis of ethyl benzoate video

reactofurnace - 1-7-2019 at 13:24

This was actually my second attempt at making ethyl benzoate. I failed the first time. I decided to make a video on the synthesis. I personally think its one of my best videos. Tell me what y'all think.

Here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKZu9GJsG-M

Thanks for any feedback! :D

Benzoic acid, not benzonic. If you insist on using "benzonic acid", then you need to call your product ethyl benzonate.

The video is fairly good, but there is a bit of space where you're just weighing things out, which makes the video seem longer than it is.

Are you purifying the ester at all, other than using the sep funnel? it's a pain to distill, but you should at least be washing it with sodium hydrogen carbonate solution to get rid of excess acid (not that this would be an interesting part of the video, but you should mention it).

It's entirely possible that benzonic acid is an accepted synonym that I'm not used to seeing, (or an outdated name like dracylic acid), but one should be consistent.
