Nitrogen Triiodide HELP ME!

anti - 7-3-2020 at 09:25

I made some nitrogen Triiodide. I detonated it on the table in my room. The table was stained.
Now, after I cleaned the table( did not work, it is still stained), I can hear pops from time to time.

What am I going to do??
Will all of the remaining particles slowly decompose?
Please help! I won't be able to sleep!!

Wipe it up with a strong NaOH solution. It won't help the staining, but it will destroy any residual.

If the staining is iodine I'd expect it to slowly sublimate away.

Would sodium metabisulphite not decollurise the iodine? Turn it into NaI and Na2SO4? That way your not cleaning up with a corrosive like NaOH.

As for the pops, they will run out eventually once the dust has settled. (on them lol)

You turned your table into rice Krispies!

Snap, crackle, pop

That sucks, but it's is kinda cool too. Make an amusing anecdote some day.

Sounds like you could use a non-absorbent work surface that can be taken off the table for cleaning if needed.

I used to use one of those big polypropylene cutting boards. Got it used at a Goodwill store and sanded the knife marks out of it.

I do love this story though.

"You look tired."

"Well last night I kept getting woken up by high explosives detonating in my bedroom. It was a real drag!"

EDIT: I wonder if some thiosulfate might help with the stains if they're iodine?

Why did you detonate it on the kitchen table? Do u not have a backyard or a driveway?

Thanks a lot for the replies!!! After about an hour the crackling stopped. I made the stain a bit less apparent using soap.
One extra weird thing: my product was crackling in the water.
So I took extra pure iodine, I pulverised it, and added a lot of ammonia solution. I stirred. After 10 mins, I filtered it off. Then, I repeated it one more time. The resulting solid was washed very well with water, resulting in iodine solution. Some ammonia was added, then filtered. This time, the water after the washing was colorless. I was left with a very large (1g+) amount of pure NI3.
I set 2 lumps on a filter paper.
After half an hour, I started detonating.I touched the big lumps, nothing happened. Then, a small particle, and a whole lot exploded. It left my ears ringing. The tabletop was severely colored. Then, small explosions started taking place on the table. It looked like nothing detonated. The really large lumps were wet. I took advantage of this, and transferred the rest to a cup containing water. If I shook the cup gently, pieces would explode UNDERWATER! I threw the whole thing out of the window.

I am not joking!

I hope you know the behavoir of this stuff very well :)
One story from my side (from a time I did not know much about)
I also produced some 10 mg of it for joking in the pavement.

And it did what I expected, but it was so loud that I won't test ist all in the pavement. So I put the rest very very carefully in a paper handkerchief and went upstairs and want to spill the very little amount in the yard. It was a quite sunny day and as I opened the paper handkerchief to release the powder, the bright sunlight ignited it all in my hand... it was too less to harm me, but I learned that even sunlight can ignite it. A later experiment indoor with a strong photo flash in a distance of 2 or 3 foot was able to ignite it.

Tip: if you're working with iodine (in any form), always have a dilute solution of sodium bisulfite (available from home-brewing suppliers) ready. This should rapidly decolourise the iodine on contact, and yes it is also safe to use on your fingers (just wash it off afterwards).

be glad you didn't lose a body part. Came close myself SEVERAL times back in the ancient days as a teenager. READ and believe about stuff first. Man, if it had been TATP.............

at least you didnt wash the NI3 with acetone and leave it to dry out in an open window turning your whole place into a tear gas chamber
good times. odorless teargas must be the most annoying run-in you can have

What on earth does WTSUFHN mean?

Yttrium2 - 14-6-2020 at 14:23

it shouldn't explode when its in water/ wet though right? In one of your posts you said it did underwater.
