Oxidation reactions: air vs oxygen?

Refinery - 4-7-2020 at 11:30

How dramatic is the difference in gas concentration in oxidation reactions? Many articles describe using pure oxygen instead of air, but this can arise simply because most lab environments have gas outlets. But from amateur pov, could simple air be used in general?

It will depend entirely on the specific reaction. For propane/air the temperature is appr. 2000°C, propane/O2 is closer to 3000°C, so the difference is quite significant. Sometimes that will make or break the reaction, other times it will simply be slower or less efficient.

Also, due to lower reaction rates a lot of air may need to be used,
then moisture, dust and/or CO2 contamination may need to be considered.
