Peracetic acid

TriiodideFrog - 12-1-2021 at 03:40

Does anyone have any idea on what to do with peracetic acid and can peracetic acid be made from acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide? Thanks in advance.

Yes and yes. Peracids can be used as selective oxidizing agents for the formation of epoxides, esters, and amine oxides.

Peracetic Acid

Be careful. In its purer forms this acid
is an explosive in its own right.

Oh, I supplied a reference, once upon a time. I'll go look for it. I've never used it myself. Performic Acid usta be kind of commonplace. Expensive, messy, and fussy. But hey, it's an oxidizing agent. That's how they roll.

OK. A decent prep. via Strike. https://files.shroomery.org/cms/5884398-Complete_MDMA_synthe...

Also, there is a decent discussion on the matter.

It's also a reducing agent- with perfect oxygen balance.
That's not how they normally roll...

Oh, I don't what oxidation you are planning, but sometimes Oxone is useful.

I once saw a fume hood that contained a moderate sized peroxyacetic acid reaction that had been concentrated without quenching the oxidant. The glass was all gone, the rotovap was smashed and the glassware in the hood was all broken. I knew it was dangerous, but had no idea how powerful it could be. So be careful, and treat the reaction with a reducing agent (aqueous sodium sulfite or such) before doing any concentration.

Ummm... It's been a long time, but I do recall explosion being a possibility if you bumbled the procedure.

That would be with performic acid. Perhaps a visit to a few Org. Syn. procedures would be helpful?

There are some old Erowid/Hive procedures floating around.

Kind of unsatisfactory, and supplanted by more modern procedures, like the Wacker oxidation (which is also hazardous in some incarnations).

Still...... https://erowid.org/archive/rhodium/chemistry/peracid.html

Expensive. Unwieldy. Possibly dangerous.

Recently I've ordered green washing substances - Na percarbonate and TAED (tetraacetylethylendiamine) - when they react, they should produce peracetic acid... still waiting for the delivery very curious how effective it will be.

zed - 31-1-2021 at 07:03

Well, the peracid procedures have preparative value, but just barely. Mostly folks have developed better work-arounds.

What about the well known sodium perborate acetic acid oxidation? It's supposed to be stable and well yielding?

zed - 3-2-2021 at 01:12

Not well known to me. Thanks. I'll read up on it.
