Synthesis of White fuming nitric acid via vacuum distillation

nitropyrotech - 8-6-2025 at 09:02

Hello, I just wondered if I could distill white fuming nitric acid from Ammoniumnitrate and sulfuric acid drain cleaner at maybe under 20mbar atmosphere, so that it doesnt decompose and no2 dissolve in the nitric acid, anyone know if it will work, I just use a cheap vevor vacuum pump

A lot of people come here and ask questions without ever giving something a try. Give it a whirl, maybe it will work. If not, nothing lost. That way you’ll know for sure, and you can report back to the rest of us your results. Everybody wins. It sounds like a good idea, maybe I’ll give it a try myself. If I do, I’ll post results.

Just found a YouTube video entitled Elementary Productions: Concentrating Nitric Acid by whatsupquark. He did exactly what you asked about, he got 99% Nitric acid out of the procedure.

Yup! There is a nice procedure on Youtube.

Somewhere, someone has had the good manners to caution, that Nitrile Gloves, catch-on-fire when exposed to concentrated Nitric Acid. It gives one something to think about.

Make sure to use a very good trap or your pump will get absolutely destroyed

would a aspirator pump with a bicarbonate bath work to keep any NO2 out of the pump?

It is not possible to use NH4NO3 as a starting matherial for that purpose. I mean, if you are interested in nitrogen chemistry and want to get a mixture of different N compounds in your acid it is a way to go.
By my experience it is possible to make WFNA from nitrate/sulfuric acid without vacuum from pure components. Another hint: distillation should be stopped after getting half stoichiometry. The topic was discussed recently. (Actually, it is discussed once per couple of months).

Anyone could become WFNA distillation master after checking the reference provided there.
