Bis(pyridine) copper iodide??

LHcheM - 25-11-2011 at 23:28

I saw from nurdrage that bis(pyridine) copper iodide is somehow "synthesized" by evaporating a solution of tris(pyridine) copper iodide from pyridine itself. But when I do so I didn't obtain a white solid, but instead brown crystals with some white specks of solids in it.
What could this be? I just dissolved the CuI in pyridine just like the video, but I let the whole solution to evaporate to dryness.

Another question is that, if this is not bis(pyridine) copper iodide, how can I synthesize it?

PS I don't have a UV light source as they are too expensive in Hong Kong :(

I'm not sure what the brown stuff is (how pure were your reagents?), but I don't understand why are UV light sources expensive in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong is one of the manufacturers of... pretty much everything in the field of electronics, and special illumination is not so far away either. Are you really saying that ordinary 18W T8 BLB fluorescent tubes are out of the reach? They cost something like 10 € in Croatia. That's not so expensive...

My pyridine was GR, and copper iodide was made from copper sulphate, sodium sulfite, KI, sulphuric acid, all AR, the CuI produced was pure white, and I just decant the supernatant and let it dry, then pyridine was added (I followed the procedure given by woelen)

Something strange happened when I redissolved the brown powder in pyridine, a yellow solution results as expected, but when I let the pyridine evaporate to dryness, a pale green powder appeared!! :o

UV light is expensive here as those shops raised the price for profit, but it was difficult For me to gain access to the industries directly...:(

Sorry kmno4, I can't read the journal as it directed me towards the "buy" page which I have to pay for to gain access to the article.. can you please post me the page image? Thanks!
