Acquired large Research Lab lot - help me identify items? Also, taking requests for glassware.

jaidormi - 14-2-2012 at 12:30

Hi everyone,

My partner and I recently acquired a very large lot of glassware and supplies from a biochemical research lab in the Seattle area. I'm just beginning the process of listing items for sale on eBay, but I wanted to open up the channels for requests of items here too (assuming that is OK on this board). I have lots of parts from Rotavaps, at least three dual bank vacuum manifolds, etc etc. 5L chemglass airfree solvent still, really an epic haul. Virtually anything, some things brand new, some things crusted with unknown inorganics :D

I'll start posting photos soon of "what the heck is this?"

Thanks!

Would you post to the UK?

Assuming that there are no legal problems in doing so, sure. It would be somewhat expensive on shipping though, I'd imagine. I'd prefer to do everything through ebay or at least paypal so I can keep a tax record, since we're selling through a business.

I'm looking for a "reservoir flask" >500mL
A dean stark trap
A 2-3 necked 24/40 Round-boiling-flask
A heating mantle to match the RBF
And, an addition funnel

I'll look through the boxes for the Dean-Stark apparatus. I think I saw at least one.

What size RBF and what size addition funnel? Do you need a controller, etc for the mantle?

Reservoir flask like this:

Do you want the reservoir flask in 24/40?

USA?

Name your prices.

Any idea what to call these pieces?

jaidormi - 14-2-2012 at 19:33

This one looks like a vacuum or pressure addition syringe for airfree, and it has a stop screw to set the volume, but I have no idea what it would be called.

I don't even know if these are assembled correctly or how you might want to use them.

?

This one is Ace Glass. Here's detail of the valve. The ends are 24/40.

Looks like you haven't uploaded your pictures. You can't ask the browser (in my case over the Atlantic) to look up an adress on your computer. To display them online, you have to upload them to an image hosting service. Or you can just upload them as attachments when posting. Just click "Browse" by the Attachment option, select your image(s) and post the reply. I'd be happy to help you if I can recognize the glassware myself.

HAHA. Thanks. Not everyone has the same entries in /etc/hosts as I have.

Pretty pathetic for a UNIX guy :(

Lambda-Eyde - 14-2-2012 at 20:26

Don't worry, we all have one of "those moments" once in a while... :D

Second picture from the top with the red plastic connectors: The bent thing on the right side is a short-path distillation apparatus. Used to distill high boiling compunds or when you're dealing with small amounts of compound. On the left is a two-neck round-bottomed flask and a thermometer/tube adapter.

The plastic connectors have screw threads right? Those are somewhat rare.

Third one looks like a bubbler (although I can't imagine why you'd want a graduated one). Does it have an internal tube that protrudes to the bottom?

Last one is stopcock/valve adapter (I can't recall what you'd normally call one of those). The black plastic valve allows for more precise control of flow compared to traditional stopcocks. These ones are commonly called "Rotaflo" stopcocks, but I think that's a trademark. Ace probably has their own name for these.

jaidormi - 14-2-2012 at 20:31

Thanks. That's a start. I'll keep posting as long as it's entertaining for everyone. It is certainly useful to me.

UnintentionalChaos - 14-2-2012 at 20:40

What are the joint sizes in the second picture....I really like the look of that piece. The short path distillation adapter, that is. Asking price?

[Edited on 2-15-12 by UnintentionalChaos]

Lambda-Eyde - 14-2-2012 at 20:44

I'm betting my socks that they are 24/40 ;) I've never understood why you americans would want to screw around with joints larger than your flasks, though..!

They're all threaded 24/40. Let me see how much more glass I have with the same fittings, etc. You'd need more threaded bits to make any use of it, I'd imagine. You want *just* the distillation head? Make me an offer USD.

You get to keep your socks!

jaidormi - 14-2-2012 at 20:50

I have tons of Rotovap adapters like so:

Think anyone would want them? How to name them for eBay?

Also a liquid-liquid extractor you could knock a guy out with. Not sure where the dispersion tube and condenser are yet, but I'm sure they're in a box here. Estimated value? Looks like 2L:

US dime is ~17mm in diameter, for comparison.

jaidormi - 14-2-2012 at 20:57

I'm really hoping someone wants the solvent still. It looks basically unused, but I was mistaken, it's only 2500mL.

Do you have it listed on ebay yet or have any images to show us?

I'm also very interested in seeing what rotavapor parts you have. Could you snap a pic of the lot?

I only have, so far as I know, multiples of what I showed, and >20 bump flasks of different sizes. I literally don't have the space to unpack everything at once so it's hard to say exactly. I *may* have the special Buchi condensers, but I have no mechanical parts of any kind.

I haven't listed the solvent head but I will show you photos shortly.

Thanks.

Distillation Apparatus

disulfideprotein - 14-2-2012 at 22:36

Do you have a 250-500ml full distillation apparatus? And whats the ebay store?

This is an adjustable volume repeating liquid dispenser. You set it to a volume and every time you lift the piston and push down, it dispenses that volume of liquid.

Note the direction of the check valves. The syringe is filled from the inlet at the bottom, and dispenses through the outlet at the side.

RBF - 1L, addition = 250mL , no controller - just mantle, reservoir yes - 24/40. USA.

Once you confirm all of these I'll make an offer.

bfesser - 15-2-2012 at 08:12

This is a 10 mL bottle top dispenser:

It would take literally 900+ square feet to lay it all out, so I don't think I can. Once I sort out some secure shelving I will start posting pictures of everything, now that you say.

For now, here's the 2500mL Chemglass solvent head.

I do have the makings for that but I'm not ready to sell smaller pieces just yet. I need to get the multi-hundred-dollar stuff out of the way first to get some money back on this huge lot. Once I'm more organized I'd be happy to start selling single RBF's and distillation kits and the like.

The ebay user is diviana11. Just 3 listings ATM.

disulfideprotein - 15-2-2012 at 11:10

Thanks I will be watching this forum topic and PM me when you can sell the distillation apparatus.

jaidormi - 15-2-2012 at 13:17

Some flasks, one box out of like 12:

Some very expensive certified pipettes in various sizes:

Misc. vacuum and other stuff:

Some stoppers, adapters, and valves.

A box of buchners:

Lambda-Eyde - 15-2-2012 at 18:03

I'd also like to congratulate you on your astronomical haul, it didn't occur to me to do it earlier.

I'm interested in one of those dual bank manifolds with 4 stopcocks as well as a 500 mL suction flask, 90 mm büchner funnel and one of those cold traps.
If I lived in the US I'd probably ruin myself buying from you... :P

Edit: Also, it'd be nice if you'd resize your pictures, they are widening the whole forum page so I have to scroll sideways to read the posts...

Dr.Bob - 16-2-2012 at 07:03

jaidormi,

I have a similar challenge as you do, selling some left over glassware from a closed company. Trying to deal with many boxes of glassware in a tight space is tough. It is very challenging, as if you spread out glassware to be easy to see, it tends to fall and break easily. I have found copy paper boxes and lids work well to hold stuff in a reasonable manner.

I would suggest making a text file or spreadsheet list and posting it, as that seemed to make thing easier for people to see what you have. But for the larger things like the 2500 ml still head, there is almost no way to properly describe them without a photo, so I understand the challenge.

I have had a lot of work to get photos sized correctly as well, this forum has odd rules for sizes, and I have not had an easy time making them fit well. But best of luck. I may have to try to do a swap for some items, as I need a few items to complete some distillation kits as well.

Do you have any double manifolds with PTFE valves? I'd also be interested in any Schlenkware you have...

Been away

jaidormi - 24-2-2012 at 13:51

Sorry everyone, for some reason I wasn't getting email notifications from this forum or for U2U messages. I am busy today but I will start answering posts in order tonight.

Again sorry for the delay.

inspector071 - 24-2-2012 at 18:47

I'm interested in a 1000 mL filtering flask and something around 9 cm Buchner funnel (and stopper, if you have any). Do you have any separatory funnels? If so, 500-1000 mL would work. If you have misc. boring glassware like 25 to 500 mL beakers and Erlenmeyer flasks I could also use a few of those.

Wizzard - 24-2-2012 at 21:16

Any dewars?

resveratrol - 25-2-2012 at 08:23

You wouldn't happen to have a stopcock that would fit this sep funnel would you?

It's I.D. is ~15mm on one end and ~19mm on the other. And the length from end to end is 4cm.

How wide should the pictures be?

Also, are you seriously interested? If so let's work out a deal over U2U.

Endimion17 - 26-2-2012 at 17:25

Holy shit, that's like a ton of money just lying there.
I'll never understand why some companies leave these things laying around. If I had a company that's going down, I'd make an auction. Those things are expensive. Just that one box full of Büchner funnels is worth at least 550$.

Yes, this is porn, allright. :D

At their level, it's cheaper to just give or sell the lot to someone local and buy new stuff at the new facility. They'll probably want to outfit things differently there anyway, and I'd imagine that in medical research you may want brand new vessels from time to time, since cleaning can only get you so far.

GreenD - 28-2-2012 at 07:55

Dr. V - 7-7-2012 at 11:25

Anyone know what happened to the Seller here? haven heard a peep in a dog's age..

Natures Natrium - 8-7-2012 at 18:01

A quick check of the ebay account given shows that they bought a 3-hole punch and a victoria secret bra in late April. No other activity since, and that account never appears to have sold anything.

My guess is that the person encountered someone who wanted to buy the whole lot, at a substantial profit. I suppose it is also possible that they are still attempting to catalog and take pictures of all those pieces.

elementcollector1 - 13-7-2012 at 07:08

Aw, darn it! I could REALLY use one or two of those adapters for my condenser (the 1-hole corks they gave me don't even fit...)
