ETN recrystallization for max density

dangerous amateur - 26-2-2013 at 02:43

I did that before, but never bothered obout crystal shape and density.

My ETN is usually extremely fluffy.
When using hot ethanol it gets needle shaped.

However, both are a pita to handle, esspecialy when trying to fill it in small tubes.

How does your technique look like, and what solvent do you prefer (I've got methanol too)?
Will the density suffer if one is growing large crystals (that will be likely crushed when pressing??)?

Density is not a problem at all with ETN. You add NG and it's maximum density. But then you need good detonator/booster. I'd stay with the needle crystals for small things and base charges.

In the recrystallization process via hot ethanol i've tryed two ways to obtain high density:
1) Ethanol evaporate and you get ETN needles
2) Adding water to the Ethanol/ETN very slowly and mixing continuously the solution (no needle formation).

What is the sensitivity and storage stability of such a composition? Considering that etn and ng are sensitive to even the smallest of caps i would be surprised if it required a booster.

Well if made care fully and well purified with a bit of urea as a acid scavenger it lasts a very long time. I have some stored for a year in perfect shape.

Maximum density esters can suffer low VOD without a small booster, esp. regarding NC/EGDN. However, this is unlikely to be a problem in ETN/NG.
