Sulfuric acid - Drain Opener-Virgin

Forumdude - 14-3-2013 at 13:50

I bought some liquid lighting drain opener it says it contains virgin sulfuric acid with 12 buffers.I looked at the MSDS sheet for it and it says it contains 94% by weight. Any thoughts if this is pure enough to be able to use? It has a brownish red color. I would perform a titration but im away from all my lab equipment at the moment

Pure enough to use... for what? Nitrations, titrations, catalyst, sulfonations, preparation of inorganic salts (or nitric acid), etc....

Forumdude - 14-3-2013 at 15:06

sorry about that completely forgot , nitrations mainly , ETN.

Forumdude - 14-3-2013 at 15:28

I would also like to distill nitric acid in the future.

Forumdude - 14-3-2013 at 20:16

All I am wondering if it is conc or not

Mailinmypocket - 14-3-2013 at 20:45

I use this acid regularly for non critical experiments. The percentage seems to be around 93%, although I think it fluctuates a little. For nitrations? It's fine. For making bromine? It's fine. Just don't use it for sensitive experiments, as a source of sulfuric acid for relatively crude synthesis? No problems! I use the same one for those purposes, I hate where it brags about the "12 buffers" on the bottle but it beats using 70$/bottle sulfuric!

Yes but that is Rooto , much more purified , it is clear i can do a titration but cant at the moment.

Anyone have any thoughts on any way of purifying this without distilling, all my lab glassware is 600km away from me .

Can anyone confirm that this works? Would it work better with a higher conc of Hydrogen peroxide?

Forumdude - 15-3-2013 at 14:31

I have 30% hydrogen peroxide already also.

Steve_hi - 15-3-2013 at 14:39

I don't know where you are but at Rona hardware stores in Canada they sell a brand called GM-30 that appears just as pure, it has only a very slight brown cast to it.

Forumdude - 15-3-2013 at 14:42

i already checked my rona , they dont sell anything but drano

Steve_hi - 15-3-2013 at 15:22

Is it a small hardware store only. Where I go it's a large construction branch .
this is the phone number of the company that distributes this product GM-30 418-658-0122you could phone and ask who is handeling this product in your area.
Also if you live near the US border you can pick it up at ace or lowes hardware stores. there is no problem bringing it back I also get my lye down there "sodium Hydroxide" there is no aluminum contaminantes in it.

Alright sounds good

Mailinmypocket - 16-3-2013 at 12:13

Does your liquid lightening stink? I bought some today and on top of being brown it smells almost like diesel fuel, really awful actually. I opened the bottle just to look at it and wow, the stink!

What is the problem with buying pure sulfuric acid? here is 4 Liters for $55 plus $12.49 shipping and handling and it's 98%
http://www.amazon.com/Liters-Concentrated-Sulfuric-Acid-H2S0...

Just thought I would throw that out there since you will end up spending the money trying to purify drain cleaner you might as well buy it pure and know what you have.

There is no problem buying it- the problem is seeing so much of my ACS reagent grade sulfuric acid going towards mundane things that aren't sensitive to impurities ie: nitric acid and bromine production!

A few brands of drain remover grade are pretty good like clear-line and rooto, but this one I bought to try is god awful smelling, probably still fine though.

Hasn't this been discussed before? Oh well

Interesting video with the hydrogen peroxide. Never ever use 'pyrex' measuring cups! Stupid n00b

I found some crystal clear drain opener in a Chinese hardware/kitchen store. Still has some sediment, but perfect for mundane tasks.

yeah mine stinks , smells metallic if that is possible haha

Forumdude - 16-3-2013 at 21:45

Amazon also doesnt ship any chemicals to Canada or atleast to my knowledge , the only source I have for sulfuric is drain opener unless I feel like spending 150$ for a 750ml from germany and I took a look at reagent acquisition page and all they had for Canada was JD photochem which is now closed:(

I have some of that stuff in an attempt to purify it out of boredom. It involved 2 separation funnels and very slow addition of water since the water separates from it because of the oil added to it I was able to get a clear sulfuric acid water solution. If you don't need a high concentration it works ok. I can't promise the purity of it. I did use distilled water and the addition was very very slow with a minimal distance between the water and the black sulfuric acid slug of a drain cleaner. The only way I was able to tell about how much sulfuric acid was in it was through a PH meter. Just a though hope that helps

As a general rule, water should never be added to conc. acid!
With sulphuric acid, water sits atop the acid and heat of dilution can cause it to boil and possibly spatter . . .
Adding the acid to water obviates this although addition should be leisurely to suppress the temp. spike!

danwillscott - 17-3-2013 at 10:16

while that is the general rule, for the purpose I was doing it I needed to add the water to the acid but it was safely locked in ground glass glassware, and all gasses were put through a condenser and into water so I should have stated that. But like you stated it should be added very slowly boiling is not the goal in this reaction. Just remember even water sitting on top will absorb some of the sulfuric acid in an attempt to form an equilibrium between the neutral water and the acid. Thanks for the input though hissingnoise I should have stated that in my comment in the first place.
