Plugged pipettes?

I have seen some serological pipettes online that have cotton plugs as the end where you would usually put a suction bulb. What is the purpose of this and can it be used without it.

Those are for preventing cross-contamination (via aerosols) through the bulb in biology. You can use them without the plug.

Also good at protecting your pipette from acids and organic solvents to have those plugs in there
