New type of sparkler

For the fourth of July my wife bought the new sparklers for the kids to play with. They were different than all others I've seen. They were made of this flexible rubber like tubing that burned very hot. By pressing them into thin steel, a small hole was burned through (with the of them wrapped together anyway).

Fairly impressive for a kids toy.

unlike sparklers, too, these fired their sparks in one direction, limiting the ability to burn yourself or accidentally start a fire.

Does anyone know what's in these things? I'm guessing that they're not oxygen balanced because they only really seem to burn fast under pressure or if the rubber is slit, allowing more oxygen in. If they're cut open they burn far, far faster.
