smells, glorious smells.

I've been thinking about making some foul smelling compounds for some time.

I figure for H2S i would just drip dilute sulphuric acid onto ZnS (is it dilute or concentrated for it to act as an acid)i think it would react according to:

ZnS + H2SO4 => ZnSO4 + H2S

But then i came across ethane thiol.
Would bubbling H2S through ethanol yield ethane thiol?

Also, i read somewhere that bubbling H2S through NH4OH will give NH4S, which is supposedly stinky in itself.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks for any help.

I think you should start to understand the toxicity of a substance before wanting to make it for its smell. The very high toxicity of H2S and the fact your nose becomes desensitised to it has been covered before.

I would not expect ethanol and H2S to make EtSH. I would expect you to have to react a haloalkane with sodium or potassium hydrosulphide (might work, unsure), or with a disulphide Na2S2 to form Et-S-S-Et and then reduce to EtSH (certain to work but might be needlessly complicated).

How about chlorine?

Almost everything smelly is poisonous, so I wuldnt mess around with it

What exactly is the point of this thread? We have a thread about foul smelling substances...

Fart

To others posting in this thread, not you Vulture, how about the plain
old FART ? Any ANALyis anybody ?

KILL THIS THREAD !

Fart is methane, hydrogen sulfide (espically if you eat eggs) and the smell of your food, Nasty mix.

You can also buy meat and leave outside and get cadavarine. mmm...

Ok, would perhaps bubbling H2S through an acidified solution of ethylene glycol produce mercaptoethanol?
