Det Cord w/ ETN

golfpro - 28-10-2013 at 17:59

Has anyone tried making a det. cord using ETN as the core? What kind of tubing? I was thinking filling some rubber tubing with an inside diameter of about 2-4mm w/ lightly pressed ETN.

A while ago I saw a really complicated way of filling a very long tube with ETN using an air compressor and bottle attachment but I don't remember exactly how it worked. If you tamp it expect to go through a lot of ETN something like 16g per foot. I cant comment on how effective tamping it is because I have not attempted it but I have seen several videos were tamping has worked well for them. As for tubing any type will work I think you would have the least trouble with polypropylene tubing it is not very flexible but would be easier to load.

look around a lot of people have made it before and there are very specific patents on it and a wikipedia page.

Do you want to make real det-cord or an explosive. real det-cord do not even explode, it simply transmit detonation wave. I believe they are made from rope which as been filed with dusts of explosives, with a superior coating. Certainly not 16g per feet, more like 1g per feet.

There are many kinds of det cord. From heavy duty thick RDX onces, to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shock_tube_detonator

We need to make a differentiation here between Detcord (detonating cord) and Shock Tube! These two are not the same!

Detcord; is a round core of explosive, covered with protective sheath (combinations of textiles/waterproof materials etc.) The purpose is not to bring flame and shockwave to a main charge but to detonate by itself. (on average detcord has a diameter of 5mm, filled with PETN core, VoD 6000-7000m/s)

Shock-Tube; is a hollow extruded tube containing a thin layer of energetic materials on its inner diameter. Once initiated, the shock tube transmits a signal to a detonator, typically incorporating an instantaneous output or a pre-determined delay. (found on the "Claymore" mine initiating system)

For fuck sake. How difficult is to UTFSE?

Any reason ETN couldn't be melted with a water bath then inject it into the tubing while still immersed in the water bath then control crystallization by playing with the water bath temperature? Should be able to get a uniform density from one end to the other and not be limited by length with this method.

This was a gem. Look at this test pal

Could one draw a plastic tape and wrap the explosive into a suitable thickness to make detcord this way? Pulling strength of tape is several dozens of kilograms easily, and it could be rolled and handled easily. Only problem comes with uniformity, which could be controlled with some form on straw-type tubing. Laborious, but if it's necessary to make detcord, then...

Play around with different methods of crystallisation and different solvents to get granule-type crystals; no more explanation needed I hope. Ethyl acetate should work as a starting point.

detcord have approx 10g PETN per metre, i assume this is standard detcord, i cant remember where i got this from but i also saw this at a site for government to order all sorts of dream stuff (tonnes of AN etc, whole kit with most energetics, bomb squad training i suppose?)

i dont see what the problem with detcord is however, if you cast it it will not be flexible.. standard PVC hose from any hardware store will do.. just mash it into there loosely and stamp it once in a while (with caution)

this video isnt really offtopic, is it?

just incase some are still doubtful that detcord's purpose is to detonate..

I wonder if a hobbyist has ever tried braided det cord.

thought this was mildly interesting
