first time synthesizing, it seemed way too tedious and had terrible yields. Any other method recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
For synthesis I used the following,
CH3CONH2 + Ca(OCl)2 ----> (CH3CONCl)2Ca + H2O then
(CH3CONCl)2Ca + NaOH ----> CH3NH2 + Na2CO3

You have the equations provided, but what procedure did you use? Maybe a change to the method used to carry out the reaction could increase yield.
