Envelope icons

thesmug - 1-2-2014 at 20:12

I'm fairly new to the forums (as you can clearly see), and was wondering what the different envelope icons mean.

Zephyr - 1-2-2014 at 20:35

Do you mean the emoticons?:):(:D;):cool::mad::o:P?
Or if you want actual envelope icons...
Could you clarify the question or am I just missing something?

*facepalm* Ohh... those envelope icons.

Thank you.

When a topic has a new post after you've posted in it, there's either a Windows XP documents folder icon or an orange envelope icon. What causes that?

bfesser - 3-2-2014 at 05:11

I don't know. Take and post a screenshot next time you see it.

Brain&Force - 3-2-2014 at 06:48

Done.

[edit] How did you make the key box in the green outline? BBCode?

TheChemiKid - 3-2-2014 at 06:51

I have never had that happen to me.
Strange.

bfesser - 3-2-2014 at 06:56

Interesting. I had noticed the bright orange envelope icon before, but not the folder one. I'll look into it.

I almost always use HTML in my posts, they're often more markup than text. In that case, I copied and modified a snippet of the page source served up by the site.

[edit] Best guess: subscription & favorite icons

Arrrrggh, the dreaded black spot of judgement. A nasty one indeed.

It's not a subscription icon as far as I know - I get that for threads I'm not subscribed to.

Oscilllator - 16-2-2014 at 19:34

I'm pretty sure the dot folder is for when you have posted in that thread. I have only noticed it when I have posted in a thread, although not all threads that I have posted in receive that icon

Brain&Force - 16-2-2014 at 21:09

Some threads I have posted in show the orange envelope icon as well. Actually I'm not subscribed to any threads at all (confused with favorites).

Maybe folder is when they comment on your post?

Let's try it. Did you see one of those icons?

Oscilllator - 17-2-2014 at 15:52

Update: This thread now has that dot folder icon, and nobody has commented on my post. I'm pretty sure the icon is there just because you have posted in the thread.

Not sure if this is happening to anyone else, but for me, for the past couple months, the envelope icons have been all screwed up. Now they won't change to the read version from the not read version immediately after looking at them, it takes an hour or so, in which time there are usually new replies. It's not a huge deal, but I find it really confusing and annoying.

For example, all of the topics in this picture are supposed to be shown as read (light blue envelope), but a lot of them aren't.

Same thing happens on the main page, with the icons for the subforums. It wasn't like this a couple months ago. Has anyone else noticed this?

MrHomeScientist - 14-8-2014 at 11:33

Yep, same thing's happening with me. It's especially weird when, after I reply to a thread, the envelope turns orange - the color of "someone has replied to a thread you participated in." Apparently that someone was me! I kind of don't pay attention to the icons any more because of all this. It would be nice to be fixed though!

Yep, that happens to me too. I too don't pay much attention to them anymore, although I used to find them quite useful.
