Where to begin?

I've had one year of "honors" level (slightly advanced) high school chemistry, and one physical science. I opted not to continue on the science path because I was not a fan of the teachers at my school (which was a shame, because I am so interested in the subject).

How should I go about educating myself in chemistry? I know the basics, but any further reading I've tried to do didn't hold my interest well, I want to play with things not just read about them.

Did most of you have formal educations in chemistry, or were you self-taught?

I myself am in the same position as yourself. My chemistry honors teacher was always out to get me because she thought I cheated throughout the year. Sadly, next year she will be the only AP Chemistry teacher there.

I'd recommend this link as a precursor to higher levels of chemistry. http://library.thinkquest.org/10429/low/indexl.htm
It helped me review some of the basics in chemistry.

Is any specific field of experimentation you want to dwelve yourself into?

Psycho-pharmacology and pyrotechnics are what I'm interested in.

I feel like there's a hump I need to get over, like I know enough about theory for now and I just need to get into methods and results, but without a professor leading me I'm sort of lost.

Thanks for the links, BTW.
