Amino acid Esters (NOT the HCl salts)

kamal - 20-2-2006 at 04:26

I'm making Esters of amino acids like, L-alanine methyl/t-butyl/benzyl ester but have process of making their Hydrochloride salts thro' amino acid, the alcohol & thionyl chloride & reflux.

Thro' this, I'm getting their HCl salts. But I want only the respective esters NOT as their hydrochlorides. I can not do the amine liberation by making it alkaline with NaOH/NH3, etc.

Can you suggest me making only the Aminoacid Esters thro' some process ?

Thanks,
Kamal

The usual way to make esters from amino acids is to reflux in methano or ethanol with some HCl you will get the ester, there are many posts on this at WD in the Organic chemistry section also here check the search engine for the material...........solo

Dear Solo,

I found that these esters are especially quite unstable in normal conditions.

Again, informing you in detail about my goal :

I want to use these esters in my next reaction in EDC (ethylene dichloride). If not making esterification & using directly the HCl salts, can you suggest something that I can get or extract these esters into EDC from their HCl salts so that my further reaction gets proceed directly in EDC ? (preferably in dry conditions).
