Recovering Forum Images

APO - 2-2-2015 at 20:15

Hello all, I've been noticing more and more that images posted on here from imageshack and such are expiring and thus not available. Maybe it would be a worth while idea to get some people on here to try and recover the images and re-add them to where they were first posted. How all of the expired images would be located, I don't know, but maybe we could set a thread up for the reporting of expired images, and then have a team to retrieve them from archive.org or other archives of the site. Just a thought.

Seconded. It would be a shame if peoples' hard work collapsed due to linkrot - especially in the Prepublication threads!

That is why it's better to use the forums built in upload function instead of image hosting sites... Finding those images might be impossible :(

I agree that using the forum's upload function should be used as well. However, many of the older images on here, or that were, can be found on more than one archive, I think that locating all the dead images and re-adding them would be the main difficulty.

That's why I always use the 'attach' feature of posts! Then we can be assured our images are always stored here locally for posterity :) There's been lots of threads where I was really interested in an apparatus, but the picture describing it has disappeared.

Is imgur any good for keeping photos?

I don't know if imgur images will expire or not. I think that using the SM server is still probably the best option though.

I remember back in the day before there was an attach to post option. Everyone had the password for the FTP for sciencemadness and you had to login to the FTP, find the correct folder and upload then link to it in the post. Most of my stuff is actually hosted on my own webserver and has been for years since a time before the attach option. Weird to think back on those times.
