"Forgot password" recovery email not being sent(gmail)

semesa - 13-10-2015 at 06:39

Hi, I've been having issues trying to recover the password to my forum account "Mesa."

I submit the form but recovery email doesn't get sent to my email account.

How do I go about resolving this/recovering my forum account.

Put gmail in your address book in case your software is treating the replies as junkmail?

Or check your spam and trash folders...

Polverone - 14-10-2015 at 15:38

Many mail providers block sciencemadness at a high level since our mailing account was temporarily taken over by spammers a few years ago. The mail is rejected before it can even reach your spam folder. The password recovery by email option should be considered broken. Register a temporary account and U2U me if you forget the password and can prove ownership of the old account (same IP address, or knowing what non-public email address was used to register the old account).

Why I'm not fixing our outgoing mail system, and why it takes increasing effort for any independent site to fix it: Exercising Software Freedom in the Global Email System

I too first ran a MTA back in the 1990s, but unless I want to make it my full time job I just can't compete with the army of spammers and the opaque measures used to thwart them.

So did you receive an e-mail to your contact address, it was just hiding in Spam? The only account recovery option Google provides starts at https://accounts.google.com/signin/recovery (an account can not be recovered by posting here or contacting Google). Submitting more accurate answers and using a known computer/IP-address will help. This post provides an overview of how account recovery works https://www.cleverfiles.com/howto/google-account-recovery.ht... and this article provides many more details on the process

Could I get help on this topic? This is still an issue. Right now, using "Forgot your password?" is like locking yourself out of your account. The mail gets rejected en-route and doesn't even enter the spam folder. I use Yahoo mail, and I've tested this with my gmail.

@Polverone I've sent you a U2U.

Hi, I have the same problem. Am I to assume that gmail is generally blocking sciencemadness?
I mean I can't even register a new account. I don't receive any message.

Uhh... well this is embaressing... I did it again :(.

Can I recover either semesa or mesa account? Preferrably mesa.

My IP will match the last login for "mesa" which was more than a month ago now I think. I can send an email from the address registered to the accounts to verify who I am if needed.

j_sum1 - 18-2-2018 at 21:27

I messaged a couple of admins on your behalf, semesa.
Gotta look after the locals.

Bert - 18-2-2018 at 23:03

I have set a temporary password for mesa account, see your U2U.

Same here with Yahoo as well. @Polverone I sent a U2U.

Could Someone help me recover my main account's password for Abromination?
My phones save password setting glitched and set it to something random when I was editing my profile. Thanks.

@Abromination you can set a distinct colour for the help message. That may attract more attention.

Thanks fusso. I will try that in a bit.

There's a sticky thread on what to do if you find yourself in that situation.

Abromination - 16-8-2018 at 21:40

Thanks Bert!

U2U a moderator from yoru dummy account and provide your real username. Or there is an email link on the front page. Then we can email you a new PW. Provide some evidence that it is you -- ideally the email you used when you signed up. Or an IP address (although that is volatile so does not always help). Or if you have an IRL contact with another member, get them to vouch for you.
