Fatty amine from Soap?

nelsonB - 24-4-2018 at 23:43

I was thinking producing fatty acid from soap with hydrochloric acid,
then heat that fatty acid with urea to get a fatty amide then do a Hofmann rearrangement.
do this seem a plausible way to produce them,

Seems plausable, not necessarily easy. But the concept is all good. Making amide from urea may be tougher than going through acid chloride or using a simple coupling agent, but ammonia is always a pain to work with. And Hoffman can give some of the diurea due to the amine reacting with the transient isocyanate. Just saw that problem recently. Have to optimize reaction for the substrate sometimes.

Pretty smart idea, I wouldn’t have thought you’d be able to do that. If you’ve got all the necessary reagents and equipment then give it a go, then share the results with us!
