Machining Project

Hi, i have recently been assigned to do a project for my youth apprenticeship class. I have to produce a product of some sort and share my experiences. I work at a machine shop i have access to cnc mill, grinder, wire EDM and sinker EDM. I was wondering if any one could propose an interesting part or project I could do or at least point me in a direction. Thank you

Here is what I want for starters:

http://www.aceglass.com/page.php?page=7651

http://www.aceglass.com/page.php?page=7658

I also want a 24/40 drill bit/reamer for making glassware stands.

Also could you please machine me some 16g or fairly heavy gauge 1.5" square tubing with 5/8 holes drilled on 4" centers approx 5' long?

I'm also lookin for someone that can weld 2" and 3" tri-clover ferrules onto 304 SS tubing in 5' lenths.

Last thing is some solid 3" PVC lathed down to where it will fit inside some 3" ID PVC pipe.

Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital ingredient in beer.

I'm sure he just forgot to mention it as it's pretty much the status quo to have a metal lathe in a metal shop. Hopefully!

"There must be no barriers to freedom of inquiry ... There is no place for dogma in science. The scientist is free, and must be free to ask any question, to doubt any assertion, to seek for any evidence, to correct any errors. ... We know that the only way to avoid error is to detect it and that the only way to detect it is to be free to inquire. And we know that as long as men are free to ask what they must, free to say what they think, free to think what they will, freedom can never be lost, and science can never regress." -J. I would certainly expect lathes --- rather, from the way he phrased it,
it sounded like they might not have let him use the lathe.

As for what to build in a machine shop, here are some possible projects:

refractometer

single-pan analytical balance
(see plans at http://www.lindsaybks.com/arch/bal/index.html )

centrifuge

monochromator or spectroscope

You could build a Castner Cell.

Yes we have a lathe but its in a dilapidated condition and you are right i am not allowed to use it. Thanks for your hints i may look at making an analytic balance and believe it or not i actually thought about making a castner cell but i was worried about what the school board would think about it. Then again they might be really impressed i can't bet on anything in my town.

Then the analytic balance would be a good choice because the most
critical component is grinding precise knife and or cone edges and their
bearings which sounds like a job for the grinder. The beam is a linear
thing, just what mills were made for. As for the other stuff like pans, base
and post, adopt the design to your tools.
