Quick question about some materials...

Lets say I have an ETN charge... and I want to set it off. Would a small bit of thermite be enough to set it off? My gut tells me yes. I have a two-step ignition idea that could easily work if thats the case.
Fe3O4+R-Candy next to thermite to detonate ETN.

MHN is much more likely to detonate from strong heating than ETN.
IIRC, blasting caps with a base-charge of MHN with a flash powder initiator were used at one time. . .
ETN, having a low melting point may just volatilize, decompose or deflagrate using thermite.
In any case, a flash powder KClO4/Al should be a better bet than thermite.
Having said that, hunches are often correct and there's only one way to test it.
You could check what Davis says about both HEs in COPAE.

What about bullet/shotgun primers?

would potassium nitrate work instead of the perchlorate?

COPAE, "The Chemistry of Powder and Explosives" by T. L. Davis can be downloaded from the site library.
I'd advise you to read and re-read the section on detonators until you are conversant with the concepts of initiation. . .
The primers in bullets and shells are not detonators---they are ignitors.
KNO3 might work in flash powder but sulphur may be needed in the mixture which might increase sensitivity.
ETN is a powerful explosive and if you don't fully know what you're doing you're likely to seriously injure yourself, or worse.
Happy reading!

Does NI3 work as a good initiator? That stuff's easy to make, and Its great for around the lab pranks.

Hahaha NI3 detonator... that is the sound of flying finger...

seriously don't play with explosive until you really know what it is. Like hissigoise said you really need to read a lot before playing with any explosive...this is not a joke, it is very dangerous.

For the perchlorate explosive, yes they existe, but much of them are to unstable to work with them. Some good perchlorate explosive existe, but you can't just change the nitrate goup with a perchlorate group.

According to old "anarchist" BS literature, 7 large rifle primers contain enough material to make a reliable blasting cap.
Have fun trying to get the material out while keeping your fingers................
Read the COPAE section on detonators, and pay particular attention to the section on HMTD. Sounds like you are pretty low on resources.

In the future, I hope people will report threads this bad. LabRatNW: please read some of the well-known professional explosives texts before using the forum as a sounding board for zany ideas.
