(Successfully) Ordering from Sigma Aldrich in the UK

Sigma Aldrich normally doesn't sell to amateurs, but they have a network of distributors which you may have more luck with.

I have placed an order with Refer Scientific of Aberdeen. No questions asked. Haven't received it yet but it has been dispatched.

Why's AcCl in a metal container?

It is in a glass bottle because it attacks many plastics.
The bottle is fragile.
So that is packed in a tin- typically surrounded by vermiculite

It has vermiculite between the glass bottle and the metal container.

There's a hint; the metal container is very big for just 500 g of acetyl chloride.

Yeah, the acetyl chloride was in a bottle of the same kind as the dimethyl carbonate. I was expecting vermiculite but it was actually some sort of absorbent pad stuff. The air in the can certainly smelled like acetic acid even though there was no visible sign of leakage.

This is a normal way for Aldrich to ship hazmat. I once even received red P packed like this.

Refer Scientific on main page doesnt contain many chemicals for sale..

are you sure this is the only alternative?

looks like you are able to buy from Sigma trough them..

do you recommend buy anything from them including simple chemicals?

You can't purchase from Sigma as an individual.

Yeah, you need to click through to the Sigma page (the red button at the top right of the refer scientific page).

refer-sigma.png - 322kB

You then fill a basket on the sigma site, hit check out, and will get sent back to the Refer site to pay. The sigma site seems to show a £22 or so shipping charge but on each of my orders Refer actually charged me only £3.95 shipping.

https://referscientific.co.uk/Sigma-Aldrich

I've placed a few orders with them recently and received everything, including the thionyl chloride which was delivered in a sturdy wooden crate!

You can get anything in the Sigma Aldrich catalogue. The refer scientific site itself doesn't have much.

Wonder if they can ship to the US?

If not, wonder if there's a similar company over here?

If you do have more nerves than time, only got experience by germany to germany but prices and quality are flawless
https://wwwneu.reiss-laborbedarf.de/shop/

1L aniline Ph.Eur. for less than 60 Euro, nearly colourless
2.5kg NaNO2 Ph.Eur. also less than 60 Euro

Ordered them to the company of my dad (toxic substances in germany beeing only sent to companies) and they had no problem after calling me and my dad! (one year ago)

Might be worth emailing to ask, but you would probably be better looking for a similar distributor that's closer to you, because international hazmat shipping won't be cheap.

For anyone searching for this later, don't bother trying Refer Scientific any more, they never fulfilled my last 2 orders (after several successful orders) and stopped replying to emails. Had to go to paypal for refund.

Anything happen that could have caused this? Any communications from them that might think they realized you are an individual?

Nope not really, I can't see any clear cause. And if they realized that I was an individual and decided not to sell to me, surely they'd just tell me that and refund what I had paid for items not yet received.

Yes, I have noticed that it was down... but it seems to be back up now. Not that I would order from them again.
