Magnesium Styphnate Synth

Ok I need some help here.

Styphnic acid C6H6N3O8 245.11g/Mole

Magnesium Oxide MgO 40.3044 g/Mole

MgO + C6H6N3O8 = H2O + C6HMgN3O8 (Magnesium Styphnate)

4 grams Styphnic acid ( 0.0163 Moles)
1.653 grams of Magnesium Oxide ( 0.041 Moles)

this is ruffly 2.5 to one ratio

From the looks of it I should use a 1:1 ratio, but what happens to the 3 remaining Hydrogens?

I'm missing some thing but I can't see what it is.

Where can you find styphnic acid with 6 H?

Then that is where I messed up in writing it down!

Thanks your response was succinct but very clear!

So 1 ro 1 ratio with a slight excess of the MgO it is!

1MgO + 1C6H3N3O8 = 1 H2O + 1C6HMgN3O8

Amazing what one wrong transcription can do!

I'm not sure what your proposed reaction conditions are, but MgCO3 might have been a better starting material. Is the Mg salt your goal, or a means to a different end?

MgO is just fine, so is the Carbonate, I can get the oxide nice and cheap at the local health scam (Ahem) Store.

Look up lead styphnate, and that is the answer.

I don't need to, your goal was pretty obvious. Just be more careful with your chemistry than your transcriptions or you'll rely heavily on voice recognition software in the future.

lol this is the weakest stuff I've made by far, but it is the industry standard of flame catchers so why not. and suposibly better handling then Mercury Fulminate/Chlorate mix (Industry standard circa Late 1800's apx)

probably make a full thread about it from the lead acetate production, purification, to final product.

Solution A is don, got a lovely bottle of nice clean Magnesium Styphnate (When in doubt get a second set of eye's on it, best safety protocol in the world imo and saves allot of time)

Atm I am purifying the lead acetate by heating to 180c for 5 minutes, then dissolving in hot methanol to generate nice granular crystals that should be the trihydrate (And this will render any antimony insoluble).

Solution A is now ready! 300Ml been concentrated down to 150ml and acidified with 0.25ml Nitric acid at 70%

4g of Styphnic acid to 700mg of Magnesium Oxide

4/245.11 = 0.0163 Moles

Magnesium Oxide
X = 40.3044 * 0.0163
X = 0.657g * 1.065% excess = 700mg (rounded up)

To 300Ml of distilled water was added 4 grams of Stypnic acid, this was placed on heating and stirring till it all dissolved, at which point 700miligrams of Magnesium Oxide was weighed out and slowly added till nearly all had been dissolved (Some trace residue is to be expected).

This is then allowed to boil down to 150mililiters at which point 0.25mililiter of 70% Nitric acid was added, heating is turned off and solution was allowed to cool to room temp befor stirring is turned off.

It was then allowed to settle for 1H to allow any possible solids to fall out then bottled.
