Mg instead of Al in amalgamations?
Would Mg turnings subsitute for Al in traditional Al/Hg reductions??

Magnesium amalgam is used sometimes in organic syntesis, the immediate case that comes to mind is in the Pinacol coupling. I'm sure you could probably
find an overview in a book like Feiser or eEROS.

Maybe. Seems like I've heard of it before. Try the search engine.
Still, Aluminum foil is a lot cheaper, and easier to come by....than Mg turnings.

The question does not make much sense as it is now. Magnesium will not necessarily reduce the same functional groups under the same conditions as
aluminium would, and vice versa.
