I don't think the kids are getting high on NO2 :D
That would come to a very abrupt end.

In all seriousness though, as I understand it the issue is inhalation of N2O from the likes of whipped cream canisters to get a temporary high.

"temporary" is a key word here.
It lasts longer and is a lot more fun in a hospital setting even with a broken wrist :D

It's sad for the people making hybrid rockets though.

It's another piece of political theater in perfidious Albion.

Part of the complaint is the littering of these small alu N2O capsules. But these are already covered by existing littering laws!

As usual the supine 'Labour' party is following suit. We have no meaningful opposition here on Airstrip One.:mad::o

N2O oxidizes cobalt in vitamine B12 rendering it inactive, thereby causing neuropathy after excessive use.

from the article:

[...]because of the behaviour of thugs and yobs, they feel they can’t walk at night, women and girls in particular, in public spaces because of intimidatory behaviour. We do need to deal with that.”
[...]

Are there no laws against that kind of behavior? What is with the rape drug #1, Ethanol?
At least GB is no more in the EU...so there are good chances, that this law change is GB only....but who knows.

Apparently dumping sewage in the rivers isn't antisocial enough to warrant action.

It's the usual "we need to be seen to do something".
Nitrous oxide has gained in popularity since the government brought in really badly designed anti-drug legislation.
They carefully added a clause to their "all encompassing" law which excluded medical drugs.

They didn't realise what that mean.
It's popular because the Tories decriminalised it by accident.

I'm still trying to figure out you can be (anti)social under the influence of nitrous. Now where is my hydroxylamine and sodium nitrite at?

Canisters? More like amateurs. Back in the day there were gangs with tanks and balloons outside nightclubs in Fort Lauderdale. Not that I had any experience with that :D

My previous state of residence. N2O is outlawed for using in power boosting
on cars. $500 fine if you're caught using it.

The Daily Fail would shout about "chemicals" and get the formulae wrong.
I suspect "Nitirc oxide" might make it into their headlines.

The fact is that alcohol has a bigger effect on society, but it's sold by big rich companies and a lot of tax revenue is raised on it.

I call it The Daily Hate Mail.

This is bad for hobbyists and I don't agree with the reason for the ban, but it is good news for the climate if it doesn't get used as much.
I calculated it once and IIRC 1 capsule of 8g N2O has the global warming potential of 1L of gasoline.
I'll take 15 km of transport over a 1 minute high.
