Mechanism for reduction

Does anyone have any insight as to how the reduction conducted in this paper might be happening?

https://sci-hub.st/https://doi.org/10.1016/S0040-4039(00)61940-8

I can't find anything else about this that would even support the idea that it's possible.

I found this reference doing a quick search on dithionite reductions, it's likely analogous.

Thanks. I did see similar reports but didn't connect that the pyridinium system was analogues to the enone reduction.
