The news of my death are greatly exaggerated. (I went away for a week, came home for a day and then went away for another week...) 
My ISP had trouble the day I was home, the net problems are most likely related. It seems to work fine now, though.

Some points
Hmm, I have been thinking about this, axe, and I know u mean well, and the ideology behind this is supreme. However, I am beginning to have my doubts.
Don't you think that maybe the idea of anyone in the wide world having FTP access may cause problems beyond them taking away bandwidth? What I
mean is that maybe not everyone appreciates having free access to vast amounts of information; instead, some people may feel that certain c***rights
are being violated.
Of course, that's the nature of the game. But I do think potential problems are encouraged by giving literally anyone FTP access, particularly
members who register solely for this purpose.
I realise it's a fine line to be drawn. But I do think that a number of ill-meaning individuals might be sequestered if a policy was maintained
to grant access only to those who at least make a remote effort to contribute.
Of course, there is no chance on earth to weed out everyone of those ill-meaning ones (of which there aren't many for sure). But at least that
way it will remove most of them... in the hope that by mere statistics, the chance of trouble is lessened.
As I said, I believe in freedom of information, but unfortunately I also believe this deserves a grain of realism!

Good of you to point it out. I've been far too generous.
The last week there has been a torrent of new members, most with a postcount below 2, that have requested FTP access. Now this could be due to
E&W being down, or it could have another reason, but that's unimportant. I've taken the liberty to delete (almost) all new and
non-contributive users, because I don't really want pain without any gain.
Contributive members are ofcourse not affected, and non-contributive members should strive to become contributive before reapplying.

Dear Sir,
I agree with your views....but I had asked for ftp access to see the material and add some from my personal collection.
Can u kindly re-activate ftp account...I will complete the activity of downloading some material and later would add some references from my
collection
I think this would help in sharing information amonst group...and may fulfill the need of information sharing similar to posts in forums

What's troublesome isn't that people download without uploading; I couldn't care less about that --- but that lots of people sign up as
members on this board which I love just for the reason of getting an FTP account without contributing to the general discussion.
So to all deleted users who have begged to get their access reinstated: NO (I'm temped to use profanities here...)

Actually you do need an account to upload, which is good because it prevents data-bombing. It's a two-edged sword though.

FTP Upload of Chemical Engineering Textbooks
This is to let members know that I have uploaded (on 30 July) to the "upload" folder of the FTP a collection of 14 important chemical
engineering e-books (English-language), published from the late 1960s to early 2000s (dates given in the file-names). These are the ones I got through
someone called "Pipi" on http://www.todoquimica.net/modules.php . They were scanned, digitized, and converted to PDF files, from print copies believed to be in a
university library in Chile. I repacked them in individual ZIP files. Enjoy, use, and distribute them!
At the same time, I also uploaded a number of smaller chemistry and chemical engineering monographs and utilities. There will be many more to follow
when I find time; I have several Gb of stuff of interest to members which is not yet on the FTP.

Also, is it possible for you to post a list or something of the content on the ftp at all?
I'm interested in contributing, so I would like to know what sort of content would be wanted, if it is only chemistry or if most science based
texts are wanted?

I have just uploaded today to the "upload" folder of the FTP the following new e-book file, which originally came from

Encyclopedia of Chemical Physics And Physical Chemistry(retry).pdf , 68.3 Mb.
The exact file size is 71,670,857 bytes.
THis item should be of especial interest to chemical engineers, and researchers in quantum mechanics, spectroscopy, thermodynamics, and statistical
mechanics.
I also wish to note that I had to have two tries at uploading it., using WS_FTP 7.5. The first time, my computer crashed out, and the incomplete
result (without "(retry)" in its name), of about 40 Mb, is still in the "upload" folder. Axehandle - please delete this incomplete
upload. I was unable to resume this incomplete file, as uploaders do not have "delete" permission which is needed in order to resume broken
uploads.
This is the second time a crash has happened when uploading - a small utility file which I uploaded on the 30th July is also incomplete, but I am not
sure which one.

Biochemistry Files Uploaded to FTP in Subfolder
I have just completed uploading all my biochemistry files to our FTP, about 150 Mb. Because of their large number, I put them in a sub-folder called
"Biochemistry&Microbiology(from JohnWW)".
The most valuable item is probably "Biochemistry Garrett and Grisham 2nd ed.pdf", 36 Mb, originally from (very
slow)ftp://books:books@myebooks.dyndns.org . With it, I have included tutorial material and study guides made for it by Rutgers University, in New
Brunswick, New Jersey, used in their advanced Biochemistry 408 course.
A problem that I have encountered in uploading some large files is that sometimes the upload is interrupted with the message "failed 550",
and cannot be resumed because "delete" permission is needed to do so. The following such files had to be completely restarted once, with
"(retry)" in the file-name of the repeated upload:
Bioionformatics - Sequence and Genome Analysis.pdf (should be 7.8 Mb)
Biochemistry408SlideShow-RutgersU(PDF-2004).zip (should be 34 Mb)
RNI-MembraneTransport-RNiederman-2002(www_rci_rutgers_edu-~molbio-Courses-MBB_408_512.pdf (should be 1.1 Mb)
In addition, the following file required TWO tries, and only the second, with "(retry_2)" in its file-name, is complete:
(ebook) - Science - Biology Dictionary.zip (should be 18 Mb)
Axehandle - please delete the incomplete attempts of these files.

Yes, it is free for all comers. But it is BLOODY SLOW, now only about 1.2 Kb/sec per connection, allows a maximum of only 3 connections to the same IP
address, and is often down (although it is usually on-line from about 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. GMT).

Dynamically updated file list
The directory "0 CONTENTS" in the FTP root
from now on contains a listing of all files on the FTP in various compressed formats, updated hourly by a very small shell script. I would do it
minutely if not for the very old P-3 CPU in the server (compressing steals my precious cycles).
Only files accessible to all are shown, certain user-specific private directories etcetera are shown as "error opening dir". This is as
should be.

Hi Folks
I have this book, first printed 1938 - it's has great techniques for the amateur.
I don't want to scan the whole thing, but it does have some good chapters: glass blowing and heat & high temperature.
I couldn't find it on the ftp but will scan and upload if anyone is interested.

Thinking that I should consolidate the server and my Linux workstation, scavenging the best parts of both and build a super machine with 1GiB of RAM
serving both as server and workstation. Yes, this would be good for the electrical bill, and save place.
