So I was skiing today and I heard a large pop and I am just wondering what they use ?

They use pentolite, ANFO or modern dynamite, initiated by something like Primafuse (a blasting cap connected to a plastic-coated fuse).

Usually gel dynamite, sometimes pre-mixed ANFO emulsion packs.

An avalanche gun is the preferred way. No mountaineering skills required.
Obviates the looming prospect of having to attend a failed shot. Dud
rounds can be a concern though. Read the last paragraph here _

Remarkably the 75mm recoilless M-20 can even be fired off the shoulder
standing. Though it's not recommended practice , it's done by irregular
combatants in the middle east all the time.
