Funding
Actually, I work 2 jobs. The full-time job takes care of my needs.
The part-time job takes care of my wants and hobbies. It's taken me
a few years to assemble my lab but IMHO, condensers are
probably the most creative labglass I've ever laid eyes on. This is why
I collect them. Current types in my collection are Alihn, Buchler,
Cold Finger, Friedrich, Graham, Liebig. The retorts I look for are antique.
I haven't had much success there.

Currently, I'm bidding on a small "lot" of labglass that contains 2
condensers I'm looking for. If the eBay snipers don't blow my
brains out, I'll post back with the excess for the forum members.

P.S. Magpie, can't argue with you on your last post - Mr. Johnson stands
up and salutes even upon reading about exciting glassware ! I had to
pony up $400 for my last centrifuge only to get the rotor. All I wanted
was the fucking rotor ! But, no problem - 1 centrifuge will back up the
other ! I'll never be lonely ! If that makes me a pervert - SO BE IT !

I'm going to rearrange my lab, so far I ditched my interest of energetic materials, and more complicated synthesis, so some pieces of glassware I
just don't need anymore. I do have a 300mm graham condender, with 24/40 joints, in good condition, the only exception is a slight stain of
potassium permanganate on the joints, I don't know how to remove. Interest?
I guess I'll decide on my books, I have 16 chem textbooks, I don't need all of them,but I'll keep a few.
Now I just need to keep enough glassware to carry out basic reaction, and extracting plant alkaloids.

eBay snipers
Sniper got me between the eyes this time around ! I couldn't get back
for the last 2 minutes because my work schedule had me on the road
at the time the auction closed. I won't give up ! I'll just look for another
lot of glass.
Question for any experienced eBay buyer: Have you ever been
solicited by a seller ? Case in point: I just lost a bidding war for
a 15kV 60 milliAmp neon sign transformer. To my surprise the seller
e-mailed me offering other transformers even offering to set a
"Buy It Now" price. Is this legal ?

Eliteforum, glad you got it ! I'll assume it's intact. Sorry I didn't have
a better fitting stopper for it. The #9 was too small so I had to go with
the #10. Anyway, I'm still on the lookout for more unusual condensers
for my ever-expanding collection. BTW, my new centrifuge ROCKS !
That fucker pulled the sub-micron Al out of suspension in less than
5 minutes ! Can't say I'm sorry I bought it ! So now I have 2 high-speed
centrifuges with swinging bucket rotors for my sub-micron Al work.
Can't wait to test it out in flash and rocket comps !

Why don't you use a sniping tool? I used one to get my hotplate so I don't see why you can't. You sign up with a site and enter your
ebay ID, the max price you want to pay and the item #. It will enter a dollar over the next highest bidder about 5 seconds before the bidding ends.
However there are other snipers so your max price determines whether you win or lose sometimes.
What if, what is isn\'t true?

I have to admit that I have not read all of eBay's fine print. But I have made side deals with sellers to our mutual benefit. I don't see
how private transactions separate from the original eBay listing could be illegal, or even immoral.

Ebay strongly discourages making deals on the side (because they don't get their cut) But your not in danger unless you ask a seller to make a
side deal and he reports you to ebay. I think they just delete your account if you are caught.

Sniping tools
Are worthless IMHO.
I snipe manually and it's very easy.
Requirements:
- Watch or stopwatch with countdown function.
- two open browser tabs
- price limit.
Open the main page for the auction about 15 minutes before it ends. Take the stopwatch and set it to countdown from 1 minute. Click bid but make sure
it opens in a different window. Make sure you're logged in, enter your max price so that you only have to make one click to submit.
Keep refreshing the main page for the auction as fast as possible after the 2 minute mark. Start your timer at 1 minute and submit your bid preferably
at 10s, somewhat earlier if you have a slower connection.
Works everytime for me.

I'm still looking for large lots of glass with condensers. Haven't found
anything yet. I'll post back when I do. Vulture, I haven't even found a
rotavap condenser lately ! It's possible the sellers are getting wise to the
value.

Sorry, I just have a couple of things to say about sniping tools...I love them!
I use SnipeRight which I think is one of the best ones out there right now. I registered the product for about $15 American, not too shabby I think.
What I like about this program is that they have their own server that deals with the sniping. So I don't even have to be on the
computer when the bid ends. This is especially useful since I'm often in school when the bids do end, and unless I want to run out of class to
snipe an auction on these SHIT computers...I think you get the point.
You can also choose the times that you want to snipe at, usually about 8 seconds does the trick although you can go as low as 2 seconds but
that's pushing it. The server is very fast and I don't have to worry about my computer locking up on me which has been a problem for me many
a time. You simply choose your max bid, and the time you want it sniped at and it's done! Go to bed, play with yourself, whatever! They'll
do it all themselves.
I've never lost a bid because of this.
You can even simulate "real" bidding patterns so that it doesn't look like you've sniped it.
All in all, I think the program pays for itself (a comment someone else had said which I completely agree with).
If you're going to snipe - SnipeRight!

MadHatter, I've received the centrifuge! The customs seem to not even have opened the crate, there was only one layer of duct tape on the box.
It's very beatiful and has a place of honor on one of my tables. I haven't tested it yet, I need to go and buy a 220-->110 volt
transformer capable of at least 150W first; which I cannot really spare the cash for until the 27th. Then I'll finally be able to make ultra-pure
PbO<SUB>2</SUB>!
I don't know how I will ever repay your kindness. If I ever find a way of making good PbO<SUB>2</SUB> anodes, I'll send you the
first 3 I make.

Condensers
I just purchased 2 more condensers for my collection on eBay. I wish they had been in
lots so I could ship the rest out. One is a double-jacketed Liebig and the other is a reflux
condenser that looks like an inverted Graham. The water flows through the coil instead of
the gasses needing to be condensed. I'll post pictures when I receive them. I've been
working a hell of a lot of overtime lately, so it was time to shop ! May as well enjoy it !

This is referred to as a Dimroth condensor in europe.
It has the advantage that it can be used in angled horizontal position, contrary to a graham. Cooling effectiveness is lower as gasses can creep up
along the wall, which is at room temperature.

Vulture, thank you for the info on this ! I'll post the pictures of both condensers when they
come in.
I actually saw one of those Dimroth condensers in the shop next to mine, but the new guy turned
it back over to the State Of Maryland, required by law, instead of giving it to me. I would have
loved receiving this, at no charge, to my collection. What a waste ! What is the State Of
Maryland going to use it for ? It was in a machine shop !

I'm waiting for another condenser to come in. It's part of a vacuum distillation setup. It looks
like a high efficiency Allihn condenser. I'll post pictures when it arrives.
