HNO2 question

Hello, i havent been a long time here, so i want to say hello again to all of the members here ;)

Im interested in HNO2, is it posible to obtain this acid disolved in water ?
It is very unstable so i dont know if it is posible to store it ?

If yes, is it posible to make HNO2 by disolvig NO2 salts in water and then mixing it with some acid ( (NO2-) + (H+) -> HNO2 ) ?

Im sorry, but im not very experienced with chemistry, so it would help if you could explain a little ...

Thanks :cool:

Exactly! Normally when HNO2 is required it is made in situ along the lines of:

NaNO2 + HCl <---> NaCl + HNO2

But that is good enought for diazotizing reactions. Purer HNO2 could be made by precipitating barium sulfate from a barium nitrite solution with sulfuric acid leaving behind the nitrous acid.

Also reacting nitrogen dioixde with water produces a mixture of nitric and nitrous acid the nitrous acid normally decomposing, however it is interesting to note this reaction.

Since nitrous acid is somewhat unstable is it usually never stored for more then a few hours and is kept cool
