Because it is strictly illegal to view any national monument without supervision , unless you're blind you can now be arrested just for being in Washington D.C. Emergency efforts are underway to conceal and camoflage iconic sites such as the Statue of Liberty , Mount Rushmore , and the Grand Canyon. A National state of emergency may soon be called to place all private resources in the direct command of our dear leader the commander in chief. All hail to the chief.

EDIT: Oh, you. Couldn't someone wear a blindfold? (It would make for a pretty good tour. "And on your left, where you can't see it, is Mount Rushmore. Don't bother taking off your blindfolds, as not only would we sue you but there would simply be a gigantic tarp over the thing.")

The worst part (for me) is that all of the government science websites are either shut down (example: NASA) or not being updated (example: CDC).

Is that true? If so, it's time to get me some phosphorous and iodine! (Not to make meth, of course. I hate it how the DEA bans general-use chemicals because they can be used in drug synthesis.)

Would it seriously be safe to buy some RP now? I'm damn tempted, but it's not like the DEA can't review buying records after the shutdown and find an order for "16 kilograms red phosphorus"... XD
Not really. 1g or so would be good enough.

H2SO4 is so useful it's hard to argue that DEA should even bat an eye about it.

Interesting (and off-topic) observation: Only red and white phosphorous are controlled. One could conceivably legally buy another allotrope (although it would be quite expensive, if it is even sold).

The government shutdown is likely to mean an early death for thousands of mice used in research on diseases such as diabetes, cancer and Alzheimer's.

Federal research centers including the National Institutes of Health will have to kill some mice to avoid overcrowding, researchers say. Others will die because it is impossible to maintain certain lines of genetically altered mice without constant monitoring by scientists.

Harold Varmus, director of the National Cancer Institute, sent this email today to "NCI staff, grantees, advisors, reviewers and others," warning of increasingly damaging effects the ongoing federal government shutdown will have on cancer research and treatment at NCI. Even worse than the litany of known, present harm, is this grim prediction: the damage won't end when the government reopens.

Over 20,600 barrels of oil fracked from the Bakken Shale has spilled from a Tesoro Logistics pipeline in Tioga, North Dakota in one of the biggest onshore oil spills in recent U.S. history.

Though the spill occurred on September 29, the U.S. National Response Center - tasked with responding to chemical and oil spills - did not make the report available until October 8 due to the ongoing government shutdown.

Nope! For one thing, the Federal Government still exists (and draws a paycheck). The War on Drugs is still on, the drone army still flies, and there are still more black men in prison than there were enslaved in the antebellum South. Moreover, various state, municipal, and corporate governments remain intact.

Moreover, informed political and philosophical anarchism doesn't simply advocate for a cold-turkey end to "government", but rather an end to hierarchical structures, such as poverty, racism, homophobia, and patriarchy. The state is often a target of anarchists simply because it is such a purveyor of violence and inequality, but I think it is more proper to think of anarchism as opposition to kyriarchy.

Framed as such, there is not a lot anarchic about the Shutdown. It's a crisis internal to the state-capitalism framework, and one that is unlikely to resolve in a manner that eliminates hierarchy in any way that an anarchist would be satisfied with.

So a core problem here is that congress seems incapable to pass, er, anything. Hank Green once said: "If congress was on fire, congress wouldn't be able to pass the pour water on congress act to save them all."

Can someone please give a link or explain about 'the not allowed to look at any public monument' issue? Particularly why?!

I don't think it's true that you can't look at public monuments, though I may be wrong.

It is true that many federally funded parks and monuments are closed and inaccessible because the staff that would usually protect them from vandalism have been sent home. Access is restricted to keep these places and objects safe. No one is going to take you to jail for looking at the Washington Monument from a distance.

I'm proud of everyone for not turning this topic into a political flamewar—and honestly a little surprised. I guess there's one thing we can all agree on: the shutdown sucks.

On a barely-related note; I just got a notice that SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, f.k.a. 'Food Stamps') benefits were reduced due to a federal decision. Those bastards fail to do their jobs, but still get paid; meanwhile, those of us who depend on the government for assistance just to get through hard times are shafted. Did anyone else here get one of these notices? For me, personally, it's not a big deal. I'm a single guy, living alone, and only responsible for feeding myself and a small cat—who loves to lick empty tuna cans. I've never required as much as was allotted anyway—possibly because I don't often buy meat products or prepared foods—but I worry for those who are barely scraping by.

[edit] This post is not meant as an invitation to discuss the politics behind welfare programs! I'm just curious of anyone else here is adversely affected.
