Definitely watching all your work. If this ends up looking reasonable enough for me to do in my spare time, I am getting a new vacuum, splash bulb and dewar condenser.

edit: condenser, not dewar flask

The people saying that the rotating vacuum seal is all that is required are obviously right.

After a bit of pondering i think the glass box can bugger off, and a bit of drainpipe + a bicycle bearing and a tube of silicone sealant could actually do the job a lot cheaper, and easier to home-fabricate.

Still waiting for 2 bits of glass to arrive to test this ...

I think this is the sort of gearbox needed. What you should do is have a look thru the cataloges at a bearing and seal store that sells this sort of machinery.
In the catalogue you will find exactly what you want.
I would not be suprised if you actually found a rotary evaporator in the book either.
The only difference is that the speed control is in the unit, while normally the motor works at one speed.
A common use for this setup is to open the ventilation windows in a glass house.
They just put the shaft that controls the levers directly thru the gearbox.
Its 'keyed' in place.
But that's where you fit the long glass tube in a rotary evaporator.
From that motor/gearbox reduction drive model number, you will be able to find the correct seal for the evaporator.
If I can do it I will try and find the right part # in the next few days
