Rooto molarity

One of my organic lab texts (Pavia et al) lists the molarity of con sulfuric acid as 18M, which corresponds to 96.5% H2SO4.

Most of the time I use Rooto sulfuric acid when con sulfuric acid is called out in a procedure. But recently I needed to know the exact concentration of my sulfuric acid.

Therefore I determined the concentration of my Rooto to the best of my analytical ability using titration. My titrant was 0.1N NaOH standardized with KH phthalate, a primary standard. I weighed out the Rooto to 2.03 g. The results indicated that my Rooto was 92.0% H2SO4. This confirmed my observations that Rooto was not at the full strength of lab grade con H2SO4.

I believe that Rooto may be sold all over the US and its strength might vary regionally in the US. I'm providing the above result FYI and also to ask you about your experience with Rooto H2SO4, and if any of you have also measured its strength.

Probably plus or minus a percent depending on batch.

I have titrated mine obtained here in CA and found a similar result of ca 91%.

Good to know as I haven't personally titrated it, but Rooto seems to be the purist sulfuric not from a lab supplier..

A question that sometimes drives me hazy: am I or are the others crazy?
