Not a chance.

Please remember: "Filtrate" is not a verb.

Where on earth did you find a reference to such lunacy, if any ?

It looks like bubbling methane through water just makes your water smell.

Please put stuff like this in Beginnings. Ta.

Many research groups have put a lot of time and money trying to find a way to easily convert methane to methanol, since it would save ridiculous amounts of money in the processing and transport of natural gas. They haven't found a way yet.

There is only this:

Methyl bisulfate came into the public view in 1993 with the discovery that certain mercury compounds catalyze the conversion of methane to methylbisulfate in good yields with excellent selectivity in concentrated sulfuric acid.[2] However, because of the toxicity and concerns with the use of mercury it wasn't until 1998 when platinum complexes were found that catalyze the reaction of CH4 by SO3 and O2 that it came into the limelight:[3][4][5]

Search the exact title on google. I don't understand why you people keep asking any and every question here like we have some duty to serve you.

Methanol from methane and water:

H2O --> H2 + 1/2O2
Plain electrolysis.

CH4 + 1/2O2 --> CO + 2H2
Catalyst, as well as careful control of reaction conditions is required.

CO + 2H2 --> CH3OH
Same as above.

Anyone here doesn't have to serve anyone else.. So keep in mind that you weren't obliged to reply on this topic if you don't have anything to say or if you just don't want to help. Sorry to be rude

The summary basically says that if you inject wet methane into a quartz tube at 95 C, which contains a lump of sintered platinum-doped tungsten oxide, and then hit it with a mercury lamp, then you get some methanol along with other stuff.

Surprising that the 'Acknowledgements' include no Dr or Prof titles.

Seems a lot of energy and effort to produce a cheap and readily available chemical.

Edit:

Got to ask Amos who 'you people' are !
