Writing on the Wall

Given the recent changes i feel that SM has started to inch it's way towards a more totalitarian environment.

Having a bit of wool on my back i recognise the Early Signs, and can think back to where i saw them before, and what will happen next.

Pretty soon it will become an environment in which i will not feel comfortable, and so must leave now in order to remember the good times had here, and not participate in the bad times to come.

Thank you to Polverone for starting the site, and huge thanks to all of you who have contributed to my learning of Chemistry, especially to blogfast25, deltaH, Darkstar, gdflp, Praixchys and many many others whose posts have been enlightening.

AJKOER deserves special mention for posting so many fascinating references to such a plethora of interesting processes, all of which i've read and enjoyed.

Thanks to all members and moderators who have contributed to a sterling forum.

No doubt i'll still browse the site, but no more posting.

I wish you all the very best for the future.

aga.

I enjoyed your sense of humor and way of putting things in perspective. I (being naive) hope are wrong about the future of the forum, and we will be able to enjoy it as a immensely useful resource of knowledge for a long time to come. Thanks and all the best

Well aga. I think you are mistaken. And I hope you change your mind.

Actually, I think your unique brand if wit is really helpful for putting some sense of perspective in otherwise inflammatory situations.

Stick around.

There's a totalitarian environment coming up in the sciency sections of this forum?

Who knew?

Methinks you're seriously overreacting. You should also have a look at just about any other science forum: most have a 'No Politics!' policy, are they all totalitarians too?

aga: Whatever, don't let the door hit you on your way out. Blowing a gasket over politics on a science-forum suggests that the real problem lies elsewhere. I don't know what that would be, and I honestly don't care. I'm here for the science. Fuck politics, and good riddance to anyone who chooses to leave because of it. Personally I see no downsides to a complete ban on the subject.

If you want a more democratic forum you're free to start your own. I've actually been part of such an effort, a forum owned by a union started with the sole purpose of running the forum. As long as there is enough money, members and volunteers to run it it will go on. All rules are set by the board which in turn is chosen by it's members.

It works, but it took a lot of work to get it running.

Quote:
Totalitarianism is a political system where the state recognizes no limits to its authority and strives to regulate every aspect of public and private life wherever feasible.[1] Totalitarian regimes stay in political power through an all-encompassing propaganda campaign, which is disseminated through the state-controlled mass media, a single party that is often marked by political repression, personality cultism, control over the economy, regulation and restriction of speech, mass surveillance, and widespread use of terror.

Totalitarianism.

Methinks aga might not be using le mot juste.

Another thing that probably isn't welcome here: pornography. Those darn totalitarians! :P

We see you all spend a lot of time writing notes to each other on the bathroom stall and always cruising for wider participation.

I do not get any doughnuts. My blood sugar has gone very low...

So I do not have the energy needed to prune posts apparently referring to gay cruising & bathroom stall hookups. Or to just detritus and lock this whole thread.

I will leave dealing with it to whoever wrote the damn thing, probably after having a drink (or 3).

franklyn, the links in your signature do not work.

(Edit)

OK, franklyn, I have seen that list. I remember various versions of it posted repeatedly, far and wide some years back. Considering the near instantaneous viral dispersion across all political spectrums, a properly paranoid netizen might believe that list itself to be a disinformation tool- High budget special interest/government/corporate users have openly solicited for more sophisticated applications and labor saving automation in this line of work, I'd expect they got what they paid for by now.

The whole matter of several long term forum members being inflammatory, intractable, abusive and diverting a crap ton of member energy away from useful research and thereby bogging down the EM forum community, pretty much eliminating anything new, useful or cutting edge(yo, see much new on the DDNP & friends or the tetrazol threads during that shouting match?!) for months on end certainly did fit the model, but I do not choose to believe in organized black ops where garden variety monkey brain behavior is sufficient cause.

I will now work harder on my evil laugh- After I get my powdered sugar doughnut. And a shot of Jack Daniels.

Rapopart’s Rules for critical commentary:

1. Attempt to re-express your target’s position so clearly, vividly and fairly that your target says: “Thanks, I wish I’d thought of putting it that way.”
2. List any points of agreement (especially if they are not matters of general or widespread agreement).
3. Mention anything you have learned from your target.
4. Only then are you permitted to say so much as a word of rebuttal or criticism.
