Gumtree Glassware - Australian Finds

Us Australians... there's at least 3 of us! Anyway, gumtree is the Australian Craigslist, but its a bit more reputable, as its really only swap and sell, you don't 'meet a guy off of Gumtree'.

Chemistry glassware seems to turn up fairly regularly on it. Naturally, most people have no idea how to price or even list it correctly, so you can find things very over priced or dirt cheap. I thought we could dedicate a thread to the Aussies and cheap 'worthwhile' glassware finds on Gumtree (or other sites I guess, but none others spring to mind). Even if the find is absolutely no-where near you, it might be near someone else.

I'll start it off: https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/footscray/collectables/bulk-...

At Footscray.
Not exactly cheap, but this user has about 6 'lots' of glassware at about $100 each. Would probably be a lot cheaper if you bought more than one lot.
The only thing more quality than German glassware is.... West German glassware

I haven’t found anything good lately but last year it there was a woman in Sydney who had a few simax 5l flasks up with huge joint sizes and she had them advertised as glass to make hanging lamps out of along with completed lamps as well as 3l erlenmeyer lamps too. This was infuriating! Such a waste of quality glassware. Some people just have no idea. They were going ridiculously cheap at 25each and she would not post them even though I would organise the deal. I don’t know why not.
I have bought a few lab coats very cheaply from local ads and there was a bunch of free chemistry textbooks I got recently as well. You just need to keep checking to get great deals, but almost all the good ones aren’t anywhere near me usually.

Anyone in Aus, hit me up for glassware, I've got a good stock of second hand stuff, some dating back to when Krushchev strutted the Kremlin. If you are in Melb, you are welcome to call in and see what's around. I'm sympathetic to the amateur scientist, I'll look after you.

I haven't looked on gummie for a while and have had very mixed results when I have. It is the most ridiculous place to search.

Due to ongoing financial strictures I have to keep out of the market for a bit. But if it is posted here I will definitely take a nosy.

[edit]
On inspection there is quite a bit of stuff there.
https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/footscray/collectables/bulk-... contains quite a bit of what appears to be relatively useless stuff. But it does have a small soxhlet with two condensers and a good assortment of sep funnels.
The beaker box could be worthwhile to the right person. Nearly 30 borosilicate beakers, about a dozen ceramic evaporating dishes and what appears to be a dozen ptfe beakers. For 100 bucks that is a pretty good deal. It is not sexy glassware but could eb very useful.
The drying oven is the same model as mine -- which works great. It will need some effort to remove some rust but is probably good value at 50 bucks.

Other lots she has for sale seem overpriced to me -- or maybe not if you really needed a 2L volumetric flask.

Is there enough interest to do a group buy and distribute?

Gumtree can be an absolute goldmine for certain items. Fitness equipment for example: often bought on impulse by people... large, heavy and generally a pain in the arse to move... sold for a fraction of the retail price if you pick he fucker up ASAP...

I bought my first bomb car on gumtree. Used to find loads of tutoring work on gumtree back when I tried to 'make learning fun!' for all the little sprogs...

Gumtree rocks!

Some small amounts of glassware from someone, including volumetric pippettes. Does anyone use volumetric pippettes at home? Not really, but 8 for $10 is still a bargain.

Also the other ad is curious. A box of 'the usual stuff' but no picture included. Probably worth a message if you are close-by, could be a goldmine or it could be trash. Mystery.

I go to techtrader in north Sydney. They are a proper lab shop but sell used equipment and new for killer prices. Check them out.

Laboratory glassware in australia from gumtree

Hello!
Here is where I will post links to gumtree items that I find, that other Australian amateur chemists should find useful.
These will mainly be items that are;
~A~ to far away from me and/or Seller won't post
~B~ not what I need/have a use for
~C~ items too good to not share

First lot of items that I came across.

Darlington NSW
Looks like a bulk amount of beakers and grad cylinders, brand is madaboutscience, I use that brand myself and haven't had any problems (yet).
Quality is school grade (I think).
https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/darlington/other-antiques-ar...

Frankston south VIC
A few beakers for $18 some Pyrex and TWO (or three) SCHOTT DURAN!!
https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/frankston-south/miscellaneou...

Brighton TAS
A magnetic stimulate and some glassware (not sure what brand, looks like some more schott) for $100.
https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/brighton/other-tools-diy/hom...

Collingwood north VIC
Someone should save this glassware $40 look at all that glass...
No idea what brand, looks like pick up only.

I have obtained a couple of things via gumtree. But things are usually way overpriced when they turn up. For example, a Bunsen, 2 50mL erlenmeyers and 4 test tubes for 90 bucks. Best buys are usually when people don't know what it is: only that it is "sciency" and they want it gone. Gumtree search is a dog at the best of times and even worse if no one knows what the thing is called. So a search for "beaker" or "lab glass" usually gives best results.

I did once get a 2L erlenmeyer for $2. I also got an entire hobby lab for $300 from a guy who was going into an aged care facility.

So if you spot something, then do share. But I think it will be infrequent. There is actually a thread already in existence with gumtree sharing.

@I_sum1
Really? Where is this thread?
Yeah, I've learned alot about gumtree shopping from my older sibling who used to buy manga and anime (quite thoroughly and intensively) from there often.

Not worth merging though. NedsHead was the eyes on the ground for this kind of thing. I miss him. Nice guy.

There is actually quite a bit of stuff there. Still overpriced. It is one of those situations where the seller would be well advised to break the sale into smaller units. I think if you were in the area you could make an offer on a selection of items.
