How to remove the organic junk from store bought acid

Here are some acid that can be found
Phosphoric acid
Hydrochloric acid
Hydrofloric acid
Sulfuric acid

All have organic junk in them that gets in the way of some reactions

So how can they be purified by various methods
Hydrochloric acid

Hydrofluoric acid
Concentrating by adding a desicant

Define 'organic junk' ...

dig around for MSDS sheets and learn about the different grades of chemicals that exist and the industry practices governing excatly what has to be declared in chemicals... you'd be surprised how lacking an MSDS sheet can be where Technical grade chemicals are involved.

You can also distill azotropic nitric acid under a strong vacuum to produce white fuming nitric acid of a concentration greater than the original azotrope but less than 100%.

Does anyone think plumbers tape will work for this application? I can not afford a 30 dollar bottle of vacuum grease.

I don't see why it wouldn't work. You could also use concentrated sulfuric acid to seal the joints as nilered did on multiple occasion, like when he made chromyl chloride.

Distill, distill and distill! Or simply heat long enough.

If the cost of a tube of 'lab' silicone grease is a bit much to take, I've seen small packets of silicone grease at the hardware store (in plumbing supplies) for $4-$5.

I don't know if I did something wrong but I found that distilling nitric acid, kech clips got destroyed even when I used dow corning vacuum grease. I would not trust teflon. I would use bend stainless wire to hold the glass together.

This was a vacuum distillation.

Also, im a bit ignorant here but what is the result of the reaction between the dye and the other contaminants of the sulfuric acid when it reacted with hydrogen peroxide? Do all the residues leave as a gas? (I don't imagine so)

I vacuum distilled my sulfuric acid, to keep the temperatures reasonable. I was unsure if organic compounds could have migrated with it. I found a very thin frosty residue in the flask when it was boiled dry. I thought that the purity would be higher then leaving whatever reactants get burned by the impromptu piranah fluid. I did react it with H2O2 first because I figured if there is anything that can migrate, its vapor pressure would be vastly increased after it was basically burned.

There simply are certain things you should NOT mess with till you have some basic glass wear!
