IMO, regarding MDxA synthesis that is an academic curiosity, the method might be more useful for synthesis of some phentermine compounds, if at all...

Nice. The azide is a great jumping off point for all types of functional groups, tho I assume that the azide is then converted to the amine. Is
there a reaction(s) that might be subsequently utilized to create the methyl-amine instead of the amphetamine?
