free chemicals, what do with them?

I just got some chemicals from my school for free.
It includes the following:
-100g iodoform
-25g monoiodoacetic acid
-250 hydroquinone

Also I can get the following for free from the school as well:
-250mL diethylamine
-250g diphenylamine
-250g malic acid
-1,6 hexadiamine
-dichloroacetic acid

the problem is, considering I do not have any organics (except acetone,EtOH and MeOH), I do not know what to do with these. My chemicals are all based towards inorganics. I also do not have a fumehood or destillation setup.

So for what purpose could these be used?
Shall I get the chemicals that are still at school?
Wich ones should not be used considering safety (e.g. need a fumehood)?

I now have the following as well:
-sodium diethyldithiocarbamate
-para-methylaminophenol sulphate

I have no idea what to do with these.

I could also het something like :
phenylhydrazine chloride, but didnt take it because it sounded quite nasty :o

The only one that stands out to me is the sodium diethyldithiocarbamate. This compound forms highly coloured complexes with many metals.

1,6 hexadiamine is one of the reagents used to synthesize a nylon polymer, however no other reagents for that are present.

The diethylamine is a judgement call on your part. In many places it is heavily regulated as it is a LSD precursor, so I would avoid taking it. Besides if you mainly do inorganic its not very usefull anyway.

Nice to know about the precursor.
I didnt take the diethylamine, I took the diphenylamine though.

I also got 2Kg p.A potassium bromide, 500g p.A aluin, 250g p.A cuprous chloride, 200g malic acid p.A, and some sodium metasilicate : all for free.
I didnt take the 100g of mercurous chloride (I like to avoid any mercury compound), the dichloroacetic acid. There are still a whole bunch of other chemicals he doesnt use, but I didnt have the time to all look through it.

Hydroquinone is used as a black&white film developer, as is para-methylaminophenol sulphate, also known as 'Metol'.

I've been curious as to what kind of complexes that diethylamine and other amines make with transition metals, there are the well known complexes with NH3, and I figure other amines ought to do something as well, but I have never had enough to try this.

You can make mosquito repellent (DEET) from diethylamine, but you need the appropriate acid (o-toluic acid) and something like thionyl chloride, which is however not compatible with your lack of fume hood etc.

Oh i forgot 1 thing.
I could could also get 2x500g magnesiumperoxide . Is this interesting? I cant find its MSDS or information anywhere.

Try it as "magnesium peroxide". It's a fairly potent oxidizer.

Where do you live? Those chemicals are interesting.
The diphenylamine is an extremely efficient stabilizer for ethers like diethyl ether and tetrahydrofuran against peroxide formation.
A few ppm are enough, it is more effieient than most other stabilizers.
I could use some of it...
You can also make some interesting dyes from diphenylamine, although that requires lots of other chemicals.

From hexanediamine, you can make nylon, as said. You need to form the salt with adipic acid and then induce polycondensation by heating under vacuum to split off water.
Or make nylon directly at room temperature by condensing adipoyl dichloride with the 1,6-hexanediamine as shown in the nylon-thread demonstration.

I live in Holland. But if you are in need of diphenylamine, e-mail german ebay member ju_ko. He supplies many chemicals from merck and sigma, so I think he can het that as well

You've asked a question 10 years after the event. You might need to wait 10 years for a reply.

I used to work with dithiocarbamates (Metam sodium and Nabam, a mixture of these becomes increasingly yellow and increasingly odorous--smells like sulfur and cat piss), so I recognized sodium diethyldithiocarbamate.

In addition to being a strong chelate ligand, the disulfide dimer is also known as antabuse (Disulfuram). I should note that the aforementioned dithiocarbamates can also have the effect of rendering alcohol ingestion toxic.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_diethyldithiocarbamate

Not mentioned there, is that hot dilute acid (sulfuric will do) will rapidly hydrolyze these into the parent amine and CS2. See here, where they are measuring the CS2 by absorbance--we used to measure the amine part by GC-NPD.

Now, this might seem like a really strange suggestion, seeing as it will involve no batteries, technology or other modern device, but here goes ...

Go to the school and use your mouth and vocal cords to make sounds like:-

"Hi. I'm not insane. Give me the chemicals that you want to get rid of, for free."

The exact sounds required might need to be a little different, but something like that.

Edit:

Always a good idea not to lie, so if you are crazy, do not use the "I'm not insane" part.
