Permanganate is the name for the anion containing the manganate(VII) ion with the formula MnO4.

Permanganates are strong oxidizers, although they are not a good oxygen source in flash powders and most pyrotechnic mixtures.

Adding concentrated sulfuric acid to a permanganate salt will yield the dangerous manganese heptoxide.
