Cheddites

I believe we need more experimentation on Cheddites, I'm surprised at the lack of content on here regarding initiation, brisance etc.

I have both Potassium Chlorate and Petroleum Jelly however I am still waiting on my Silver Nitrate from ebay to make SADS.
Quick question - Is it mandatory to have Nitric Acid when making the double salt? Does it encourage formation of the double salt or something?

I'd also like to question the role of Manganese Dioxide in this mixture, apparently it helps "propagate the detonation wave" but that sounds a bit sketchy.

This guys two videos are the only good relevant finds I could uh find regarding cheddites. The idea of cheddites sounds promising, a cheap, easy to make, robust explosive.
Here he makes 200grams of 'vaselate', Potassium chlorate and Vaseline.

Here he sets off 1Kg of this substance.

Back when I first joined the forum, I was interested in cheddites (not so much anymore though). I found that adding potassium permanganate made it easier to initiate, but I didn't have anything to measure the VoD or power quantitatively, and I didn't notice any qualitative difference in power. My cheddites generally required a secondary explosive (ETN) booster of a few grams to achieve full detonation.

Looked in the sciencemadness.org library?

http://www.sciencemadness.org/library/books/the_chemistry_of...

http://www.sciencemadness.org/library/books/nitroglycerine_e...

Or tried searching the string "sciencemadness.org cheddite" via Google rather than the (somewhat wonky) search feature here?

Please also read the FAQ on starting a new thread outside of beginnings. The EM section in particular requires you to follow these procedures. So this thread is going to get moved to beginnings or attached to an existing thread-

It is okay to be ignorant when first arriving and posting. However, you must be willing to make an effort to learn. If you are unable to cite references in support of an idea or as background to your question, the post belongs in Beginnings. Questions that provide background information and show effort are more likely to receive good responses. If an existing thread covers the topic you're about to post about, post in that thread instead of a new one. It makes it easier for members to keep up with topics of interest. You may need to search before posting if you're unsure whether or not a thread already exists. The search engine is not very powerful and may miss relevant threads, but please make at least a cursory effort.

Apologies Bert, I should have read the FAQ. I have one particularly important question, is nitric acid required in the synthesis of SADS?
