By supporting phosphorus pentoxide on silica gel, because otherwise it turns into a sticky mess and stops reacting, researchers were able to perform
Friedel-Crafts acylation starting with the organic acids (rather than acid halides or acid anhydrides) and the aromatic substrate. This would result
in superior yields to ordinary Friedel-Crafts with an acid anhydride, since the anhydride reforms after it reacts. Paper is attached.
