Finding candidates for solid-state electrolytes?

From what I read, a solid electrolyte needs to be both a ionic conductor and electron-insulating material.
How would you predict which compounds are likely going to exhibit such properties and which wouldn't ?

Besides, concerning solid-state batteries: is it really as simple as just putting the anode and cathode in direct contact with a solid-state electrolyte?

PS: I should get it fast, but only if you explain quite slowly :D
